Teabagger Whacktard Christine O’Donnell Warns Against Mice With Human Brains!

It turns out that mice have been produced with 1% human brain, and a Standford researcher went to his ethics panel with a request to produce mice with 100% human brain. However, that request was disapproved and the experiments were not run.

Human-mouse chimera studies were reported in 2004 that involved the injection of human neural stem cells into developing mouse brains — something different from crossbreeding — resulting in brains that were one percent human, and a Stanford researcher did ask his ethics board for an opinion on the ethics of creating chimeric mice with 100 percent human brain cells, according to The Washington Post. But that experiment was never conducted.

So as the other guest on the O'Reilly show said when O'Donnell made her statement, it was an exaggeration. But it seems that we can expect mice with 100% human brain, from some other country perhaps.

Given those facts, why would it make someone a Whacktard to warn people against scientists trying to make mice with human brains?

Just curious.

Let's look at what she said.

O'Donnell on Bill O'Reilly's show said:
they are doing that [cloning humans] here in the United States....

No one was cloning humans in 2007 in the United States.

O'Donnell on Bill O'Reilly's show said:
... American scientific companies are cross-breeding humans and animals....

No one was and no one is cross breeding humans and mice.

O'Donnell on Bill O'Reilly's show said:
...and coming up with mice with fully functioning human brains. So they’re already into this experiment

No they are not already into this experiment.

Summing up: she was wrong, wrong, and ridiculously wrong.

......................

But it seems that we can expect mice with 100% human brain, from some other country perhaps.

The case you cited was in 2004. No one has done that yet. Where and when do you expect these human-brained mice to be developed?

It's true! :)

I wonder if she also thinks a sheep could be born with a human face?

Just curious, but did the LGF folks point and laugh at this when President of the Untied States George W. Bush made this same type of statement in a State of the Union address?

I mean, I think both instances are cases of laughable fear-mongering from political partisans who are ignoramuses with regard to any science. I'm just not sure that making a big stink about it now after the "human animal hybrids" remark of years ago got by with little fanfare is something that'll actually lend credence to the scientific view rather than the typical know-nothing anti-intellectuals.

Look at the facts, the researcher was ready to develop them. He didn't because of "ethical concerns".

Here's what I don't get - that ethics panel wasn't likely to have been a bunch of O'Donnells and GWB types. The concern about these types of scientific experiements is a concern that occurs BEFORE the experiment, not after it is done and the product actually exists.

So is it wrong then to discuss ethics of science, and wrong for politicians to offer there opinions on it? Even though they may not get the scientific terms or get the whole concepts right because of limitations in their training.

But we are still talking about objective capabilities existing to develop these hybrids and existence of mice with percentage human brain. Currently.

no

Even though they may not get the scientific terms or get the whole concepts right because of limitations in their training.

My answer is perhaps. I understand that political candidates may not understand all aspects of a scientific issue. On the other hand, O'Donnell has gone on record as saying there is at least as much if not more evidence for creationism than evolution. Therefore she really doesn't understand science well enough to talk about it in public.

In any case, leaving aside the terminology, the bigger problem is her claiming that it already happened. I expect people who are going to appear on television to discuss controversial scientific issue to know the current state of affairs. This was not "gotcha" journalism from O'Reilly. O'Donnell was the one who brought up the topic of mice with human brains.

When/if someone goes on TV to warn us that scientists are trying to make mice with 100% human brains, then we'll decide whether that makes them a whacktard or not. But until that happens, we can't make a call.

My head isn’t in the sand, Christine. I have the biggest head in the world. There isn’t enough sand on the beach in Hawaii for my head to be in there.

The man has a sense of humor. At least give him credit for that.

You should read your own link more carefully. What the researcher was proposing was mice with 100% human brain cells. That is -- they would still have mouse-sized brains but those brains would be composed of human brain cells. That is a long long LONG way from "mice with fully-functioning human brains."

Wow, someone is actually trying to defend this nutty lady.

Yeah, someone who in another thread questioned the intelligence of someone who graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School.

The irony is staggering.

I have a different theory. Mrs. Shemp and I both think she might be a repressed lesbian who's fighting her urges.

I wonder if she was born that way, or just drifted towards other women from failing with men because she was kind of mousy.
