9-11 Presentation at NMSR, May 19 2010

Sorry, but your "thinking" I "should draw one" doesn't really inspire me to do so. If you like them so much, perhaps you should draw one. Yes?

And you still haven't told me what explanation of mine you're having trouble understanding.

... says the guy whose scientific lexicon includes the term "a ton of bricks!"

Says the poor, deluded commentbot who argued that an impact from a "ton of bricks" wouldn't hurt a bit, because it's just a loose pile of rubble without any structural integrity...

"Wouldn't hurt" what? A human body? Or an 80 or 90-storey steel and concrete tower?

Don't forget that this attention-seeker also asserted that a pile of rubble the size of the Earth's moon might not crush a high rise. It's a game; forget it. JREF allows trolling. On the bright side, he/she will likely win the August Stundie award.

So you're not interested in trying your hand at what is arguably a fundamental engineering tool in order to further your understanding of both engineering physics and a particular situation?

If you like them so much, perhaps you should draw one. Yes?
I have drawn one - several thousands, actually.

And you still haven't told me what explanation of mine you're having trouble understanding.
This is incorrect - it is you who seem to have trouble understanding the physics at play in our particular situation. I think you should draw a free body diagram so that you might see more clearly what happened during the collapse.

No, because I understand the concept. I'm sorry you don't.

That must make you really happy! :)

Perhaps because you folks haven't explained it very well. Or you haven't actually used any recognized principles of physics. Just a guess.

I'm sorry also, but for a different reason.

That must make you really happy! :)
I'm an engineer - I'm not happy unless I'm angry.

Maybe, but just think - you could use a free body diagram to prove us wrong! Think of how cool that would be.

Hmm, but if I'm not familiar with drawing free body diagrams, how would that help me?

It's obvious to me you're just dying to do a free body diagram of Newton's Third Law, in order to educate me. Please, please, have at it. I would be very happy to look at it.

It wouldn't be as effective if I drew it for you. The learning process is also an important tool. You should draw your own free body diagram.

I'll think about it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Would you like any more poetry tools?

You're welcome. Let me know how it goes if you take a stab at it. I'm sorry I don't have any resources for you, but all of mine are hard copies. A lot of us learned on Meriam and Kraige, but I'm sure there are other, equally valuable, books available.

Would you like any more poetry tools?
No thanks. The guys at work think I'm weird enough already.

AZ. please leave the bad troll alone. let him sulk under his dark bridge. best not to tempt the troll unless you have the three billy goats gruff with you.

Feeding them is Pavlovian and counter productive. ;)

They keep coming back for more.

..and, if you remember Pavlov, they will salivate on the bell ring

I'd settle for a limerick. A limerick outlining the Bazant crush-down, crush-up hypothesis. I would even offer a reward for the best one. $10 Canadian.

There once were two towers too tall
For their good, so they started to fall
...

I've only got one on WTC7

There was a young Shyam called Sunder
whose physics was woefully under
the level of skill
required of a Shill
the conspiracy soon fell asunder

Ooo, that's pretty good, Bill. It's even got a bit of haiku feeling to it.

It would be nice to make one as tight as this one about 9/11.

'' There was a young lady called Bright
who could travel faster than light
She went out one day
in a relative way
and came back on the previous night..''

Why would I make a "free body diagram"? Was I claiming to be an expert at technical drawings? If so, please link to the post where I make this claim. Thanks.

<facepalm>

You really should try it... it might just help you understand the physics involved.

again... how does water manage to crush that car?

have you figured out how to use the timer function yet in youtube?

As someone who keeps quoting netwon's laws as support, misunderstanding the basic construction of the towers (did you find out how many of those columns were cross braced on which floors yet?), seem incapable of using a timer or a stopwatch... it just might help you if you tried to figure them out.
