Voting present yet again...

He supports religious freedom in the abstract but this particular project? No comment.

Thank you for your bold leadership, sir.

Hmm.
Quote mine; weasel words; rhetorical flourish; excluded middle fallacy.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — President Obama said on Saturday that in defending the right of Muslims to build a community center and mosque near Ground Zero he “was not commenting” on “the wisdom” of that particular project, but rather trying to uphold the broader principle that government should “treat everybody equally” regardless of religion.

Also, honestly, goalpost moving.

So Obama's still sitting bravely on the fence? I haven't seen a lot of people saying they don't have the right to build a mosque there; the issue is whether they should.

Bravely bold Sir Robin!

You know who else was bravely on the fence? The wimpy dude who said :
I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Pansies, all of them.

I think Obama's statement was perfect. That's exactly what a head of state should be saying, no more no less.

The President is not a pundit, a journalist, a columnist or a political commentator, he's there solely to represent the Constitution, which he did.

This is probably the single boldest stance Obama has taken as president.

At least since the Skip Gates snafu. I think he's just been really gun-shy since then.

To be honest, I really have no idea if 9/11 actually gained Al Qaeda anything in the long run, or even in the short run, other than the thrill of pulling off such a feat. It seems to me like they'd be much better off today if they'd dedicated that decade of planning, those resources, those committed soldiers for the cause, to cementing their hold on Afghanistan and destabilizing Pakistan.

Their goal was exactly what Clausewitz said was the objective of all wars, to wit, to destroy the enemy's ability to resist their will in foreign poicy.

We're broke and other countries are refusing to participate on major operations with us. We have, thus, less influence over the shape of society in Muslim countries or influence over the policies of their governments.

Osama won because the Shrub had no clue how wars are won and he took the word of a bunch of idiots who thought war was supposed to be a business in planning the adventure.

Hallowed ground?

I looked at a street map depicting the proposed location.

Two blocks away. (roughly north by north ease? Might not have had the map properly oriented).

WTF? It isn't "at ground zero" it is 'near" ground zero which bit of pedantic precision some of the folks getting in an uproar take great pains not to acknowledge.

Of is all of Lower Manhattan now hollowed ground? If so, the New Yorkers need to stop taking themselves so seriously.

There are Muslims living nearby. within walking distance. Are they going to have to walk farther to go to the mosque just because a bunch of rednecks get their panties in a knot?

Am I, by the same token, supposed to be able to say that the Mormons may NOT build their church where I have to see it because they murdered a bunch of settlers a hundred years ago? Get a clue.

Who are you talking to?

I support the rights of Muslimes to build a Mosque at the location, but, frankly I do have my doubts about the wisdom of it, and whether it's the best way to acheive it goals, same as Obama.
THe problem I have is with the ugly tone a lot of it has taken, and the outbreak of Anti Mosque sentiment in several places. I would like to see somebody deny that the opposition to that Mosque in Mufressboro Tennesee is based on pure bigotry.

Again with the defeatist attitude. You can't appease bigots. If you give them even an inch, they'll end up taking miles from you.

Don't you just love this argument?
I love it so much I want to puke. Why can't (allegedly "patriotic") conservatives understand that we're better than Saudi Arabia?

That's not really a fair representation of what he said. He's for religious freedom in the abstract and for religious freedom to build this project, but he's not commenting on whether they should build this mosque here. And why should he comment on that? What should be built in a space is an issue for the property owner. What may be built in a space, and specifically the religious freedom aspect of that question, is something worth commenting on.
