Also, considering the problems of poverty on many of the reservations in Canada, a community of Native Peoples who are all rich would be quite a big thing. Every other Native community would be looking at them to see how they did it!

You don't seriously think those casinos make money, do you?

Ah, the joys of "consent". Find a statute that you think confers some juicy benefit - consent! Find a statute that you think imposes some duty or burden - don't consent! Voila!

Law is like a buffet. You just pick and choose what you like.

What a bunch of maroons.
FOTL do actually admit that.
Their argument is that they may withdraw their individual consent from each individual statute.
Therefore if they see a statute they like, they consent to it.
Normally there is some financial reward for the FOTL by consenting.

They're like entitled children with a line-item veto on adult responsibility.

Can I recommend A.P. Herbert's "Misleading Cases in the Common Law" to everyone?

The case of the cheque written on the cow to defray Mr Herring's income tax bill is a classic.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negotiable_cow

Those cases formed a series filmed by the BBC forty years ago, and featured the imcomparable Alastair Sim as the judge. I hope they haven't wiped it, as was common practice at that time.

Oh, come on - Herbert understood the law, and based those on reality. We're talking about FOTL here.

Although, as already mentioned, the FOTLers might be well advised to pay attention to R v. Haddock.

"Was the cow crossed?" "No, your worship, it was an open cow."

Akshully, I think it's possible to turn a blank piece of paper into a check, by writing the bank routing number and your account number on it, along with the name of the payee, the amount and your signature. If all that information is included, your bank should be able to honor it.

I've read that every year the IRS receives at least one check written on a shirt by some joker making a pun on "the shirt off my back". If the necessary information is included, they just go ahead and process it.

Checks are pretty univerally processed electronically nowadays. Just yesterday I paid my car insurance premium from my checking account over the phone, just by giving the insurance company the routing and account information. In less than a minute, the customer service rep informed me that my payment had been processed successfully.
Oh, I understand that concept completely. But that presumes you provide the bank routing number and the account info. Those represent a real bank, a real account, and real funds.

The FMOTL writes magic words in magic colored ink on a freaking bill, and tells the utility company to take the funds out of their slavery bond or whatever.

"All secret societies would be disbanded and all assets seized."

How do you know when you have got them all?
If they are "secret" then by definition people wouldnt know about them.
I have always thought the term "secret society" a little stupid.

They forgot to outlaw mutant powers. Then the would have the trifecta: banning Commies, Mutants, and Secret Societies as traitors. Then Freetopia can assign bands of Freepers as troubleshooters to find and execute any commie mutant traitors.

The computer is your friend :)

From looking at the 'instructions' it may be the water company thinks there was a cheque attached but it's been lost somewhere. Give it a month or so when they can't find it, a quick "sorry, we couldn't find the enclosed cheque. Please resend" apology letter and all will be back to normal in the normal world

Or they'll come and turn off the water.

ETA:Then he can use FOTL strategies and turn a water bill into a 5 year sentence. What a win by FOTL standards.

FOTL magic is like the reverse Midas touch.

It's funny how freemen who believe that statutory law doesn't apply to them make an exception for the Bill of Exchange Act 1882 isn't it? I wonder why?

I wonder what happens if the company they use this on refuses to consent to that act?

I doubt if they've thought that far ahead. Consequences don't seem to play a large part in their thinking.

ETA: Maybe they'll refer to the Magna Carta or more probably to god's law.

I've no doubt there are umpteen FMOTL legal 'theoreticians' researching this troubling scenario. My guess is the answer must lie with Magna Carta (it always does doesn't it?) or perhaps sending a 'Notice of Understanding and Intent and Claim of Right' will do the trick?

My own opinion is that if a freeman is confronted with this problem he should stand outside the offices of the company in question & fling his faeces in their general direction like a mentally disturbed capuchin monkey.

I admit I would LOVE to see a FOTL loon try this crap on a company owned by members of a certain Italian American Fraternal Organization, and have a couple of big guys name Guido and Luigi show up to talk with him about it.....

What they really do is claim that "Corporations" are subject to all statutes, as statutes are written so they apply to "persons". They claim that corporations are "persons" for legal reasons, but that "human beings" are not, despite the fact that the legal definition of a "person" encompasses them both.

http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/person

person n. 1) a human being. 2) a corporation treated as having the rights and obligations of a person. Counties and cities can be treated as a person in the same manner as a corporation. However, corporations, counties and cities cannot have the emotions of humans such as malice, and therefore are not liable for punitive damages.

Oh, and

3. But when the word "Persons" is spoken of in legislative acts, natural persons will be intended, unless something appear in the context to show that it applies to artificial persons. 1 Scam. R. 178.
