Haiti to become under temporary American control?

The US is going to take advantage of Haiti just like it did in Afghanistan
Has the thought ever occurred to you that the US is actually trying to do some good and that the airport needs some leadership that is temporarily missing in order to enhance aid to the needy?
Take a very long deep breath for a moment and be thankful that we have excess resources and the will to share those resources with the people who need it most. Its difficult to imagine a better use of our armed services than this effort. Our military just happens to have the knowledge of managing an airport which will actually come in handy. What would you suggest? Obviously they will let the Haitians take over when they are capable.
We need to remember that Haiti had a substantial UN peace keeping presence, at the will of the Haiti government, because they couldn't handle the situation themselves and were in the process of handing off law enforcement. This disaster was the biggest loss of life in the UN's history. We are there to help, nothing sinister about it and the private sector is doing the same and in spades.

Some people just feel the need to ignore the patently obvious... there really are times when we can put aside our partisan & ideological differences to join in a common cause. The fact that we don't do it more often doesn't diminish the importance of doing it now.

Obama will make Haiti a dependent state just like Puerto Rico and Israel.
Israel is a dependent state of the US? I thought you were claiming that this whole time Israel was secretly controlling the US, causing the anthrax attacks....

The reason we are doing this all is that we are that damn awesome.

What? That isn't a good reason to help?

What a ridiculous thread.

The US can be rightly criticized for many things, but how we respond when other nations need our help because of natural disasters isn't one of them. No nation has done more to help other countries in situations like that than the US has. No other country has the will or the ability to aid Haiti like we do. We will send the military and government employees, private aid organizations, and massive amounts of money and supplies to help Haiti. There is no ulterior motive here.

Nonetheless I anticipate protests outside US Embassies against the "occupation of Haiti!"

Remember the people who thought we were sending the Navy to Indonesia after the tsunami to "finish off, by extermination, the people of SE Asia?"

By the way, am I the only one who is disappointed in how long its taking to get the Comfort underway? As it stands the Bataan is going to have the only first rate hospital facilities in the entire country when it arrives (thankfully LHD's have very robust trauma treatment capabilities).

I just heard on the radio that the US military is taking over the main airport in Port-Au-Prince. How much farther will this go?

Will the US take over the security situation in the entire country..or even just the capital?

If anyone is to assume control for any part of that pathetic country, it should be the UN..and not one single nation.

Why yes - because the UN has done so well at running things/working in damaged countries all over the world. Based on all the news I have read/heard/watched about them in the past 20 years their best and most used skill is pulling out their forces whenever somebody local looks mean at them. Not a great recommendation for running a rather large and fragile operation.

I do agree that the US should not take over anything unless specifically requested to do so by the Haitian govt. I suspect that will happen (or something effectively like it) pretty soon now.

Well, there's also standing by and doing nothing as a genocide is performed under their noses, running child prostitution rings, stealing billions in bribe money... just the organization to help Haiti.

Yes, but in case of a disaster of such a magnitude send in relief efforts first, ask for permission later -- much like you would push someone out of the way of an approaching car despite the fact that technically that is assault 'n' battery because you didn't have his permission.

By the way, the government of Haiti (what's left of it) had officially requested the USA to do what it is already doing.

Nasty, evil imperialist occupiers!

It's definitely better to move in and help first, ask questions later. Waiting for the UN to act is dumb, especially given our proximity and the extreme certainty that UN action would involve us anyway. Besides being the right thing to do, Haiti is our neighbor, even if most Americans don't have a clue where it is in relation to us.

A questionable comparison.

Don't you think it's understandable and reasonable that Haitians and sympathetic observers would be keen to prevent yet another disastrous US military occupation of the country?

If you are injured and starving and your children are at risk of dying you'll take aid from who ever give it to you. I doubt most Haitians are talking politics while waiting on lines for clean water.

My comment was about military occupation not emergency aid.

Haitians don't forget history.

How many Haitians need to die to satisfy your hatred of the United States?

This isn't rhetorical, it's a serious question.

Haitians don't forget history.

And everyone else does? Just about every nation on earth has had a military occupation by another nation. It's taught in school. Haitians are no different than anyone else in this respect.
