Israel is a dependent state of the US? I thought you were claiming that this whole time Israel was secretly controlling the US, causing the anthrax attacks....Obama will make Haiti a dependent state just like Puerto Rico and Israel.
Some people just feel the need to ignore the patently obvious... there really are times when we can put aside our partisan & ideological differences to join in a common cause. The fact that we don't do it more often doesn't diminish the importance of doing it now.
What a ridiculous thread.
The US can be rightly criticized for many things, but how we respond when other nations need our help because of natural disasters isn't one of them. No nation has done more to help other countries in situations like that than the US has. No other country has the will or the ability to aid Haiti like we do. We will send the military and government employees, private aid organizations, and massive amounts of money and supplies to help Haiti. There is no ulterior motive here.

I just heard on the radio that the US military is taking over the main airport in Port-Au-Prince. How much farther will this go?
Will the US take over the security situation in the entire country..or even just the capital?
If anyone is to assume control for any part of that pathetic country, it should be the UN..and not one single nation.
Why yes - because the UN has done so well at running things/working in damaged countries all over the world. Based on all the news I have read/heard/watched about them in the past 20 years their best and most used skill is pulling out their forces whenever somebody local looks mean at them.
I do agree that the US should not take over anything unless specifically requested to do so by the Haitian govt. I suspect that will happen (or something effectively like it) pretty soon now.
Nonetheless I anticipate protests outside US Embassies against the "occupation of Haiti!"
Remember the people who thought we were sending the Navy to Indonesia after the tsunami to "finish off, by extermination, the people of SE Asia?"
Don't you think it's understandable and reasonable that Haitians and sympathetic observers would be keen to prevent yet another disastrous US military occupation of the country?
If you are injured and starving and your children are at risk of dying you'll take aid from who ever give it to you. I doubt most Haitians are talking politics while waiting on lines for clean water.
A questionable comparison.
Don't you think it's understandable and reasonable that Haitians and sympathetic observers would be keen to prevent yet another disastrous US military occupation of the country?
How many Haitians need to die to satisfy your hatred of the United States?
This isn't rhetorical, it's a serious question.
Haitians don't forget history.
And everyone else does? Just about every nation on earth has had a military occupation by another nation. It's taught in school. Haitians are no different than anyone else in this respect.
