Hey, thanks Funk, good info. I didn't realize that various Muslim countries had such varied ways of doing things. One of these days I'll have to travel to that part of the world.

As someone who lives in a muslim nation I can tell you they are all EXTREMELY different. Even different cities in the same country can be extremely different.

Historically there seem to be what I call two "types" of islam. City islam and the desert islam. City islam (my defintions) is best thought of as the more relaxed islam. They are very open, very interactive women are considered equal and treated the same. The genders mix and get together. (think of egypt, jordan, turkey). Lots of these muslims are very relaxed and accepting of anything. Including drinking.

The desert islam is what is preached in Saudi, iraq, iran and pakistan... it is much more "traditional" and fundamental. This is the women wear burkhas, completely covered, treated as a prized pet, men and women don't mix. It really is from the influence of the Saudi's in the 70's and all of their Oil money. They build mosques all over the world and train imams who are very very traditional.

Again, I have knocked back hennensy (sp) (it is the shieks favorite, not mine, I prefer jack and coke) with a local shiek and seen numerous Emirati's in the local golf club having "adult beverages."

Well the Old World Order was overthrown in 50 AD. after the Christ debacle. What a nightmare that was. The Jews were pissed. We ran a spin campaign, created Christianity and had the letterhead changed to World Order. The guys with the chisels down at Local 1 were thrilled and productivity shot up 33%. Membership among the chiselers grew, flash forward a 1000 years and nearly all our members were masons, tile setters and concrete guys (techno geeks). Some uppity kid from the Venice chapter started mumblings that we weren't progressive enough. He pressed, we pressed back, but eventually the New World Order emerged stronger, and with a hip new moniker the kids could relate to. Been that way ever since.

My bad, you're right; There are some fundies who are absolutely brilliant when it comes to discussing whatever thing it is they worship. BTW, Islamic Fundamentalists appear intelligent enough not only to be able to discuss their religious beliefs but to thrive on the "War on Terror" and outwit and defeat the USA's vast military machine.
