Whoopi Goldberg: "Who shot the footage?!"

No. It deforms in response to forces acting on it, one of which (not the only one) is gravity.
And there is no gravity on the lunar surface?

To achieve that effect on the moon probably took some work.
Not really. It's got a horizontal rod across the top of the flag, but the bottom and outer edges are free. You can get such ripples (or waves) in a near vacuum by jiggling the springy top bar. I doubt it took much work.

I think it was more difficult to get the thing to stay standing in the powdery regolith. I think they needed to stack some rocks around the base of the pole.

I used to work with a YEC who believed that "the firmament" was actually a sort of crystal sphere around the Earth, and that it once held back the waters that poured down as the Flood when the floodgates in the firmament were opened. Since then, he says, any space craft that leaves Earth orbit just happens to go through the open floodgates rather than hitting the firmament.

My understanding is that the flag was made of nylon and it got really crumpled in transit. In addition, the astronauts reportedly did not extend the telescoping rod fully because they thought the flag looked better that way.

Why would anyone not want the moon landing to be true? It's probably the most awesome thing that's happened in my lifetime. Offhand, I can think of no downside to it.

What's not to like?

Rolfe.

That's the thing about conspiracy theories. There's no event so dramatic or awe-inspiring that the wackjobs won't say it's not dramatic ENOUGH, there must be MORE to the story.

I think a lot of them feel left out of the universally shared joy or sorrow of a big event like the moon landings or the 9/11 attacks. They don't want to be just one of the sheeple. They want to be in the forefront. They begrudge the attention received by the heroes that step up during these dramatic moments in time, while they themselves watch bitterly from their parents' basement, growing oily-faced and weak from a steady diet of Skittles and Mr. Pibb.

Embracing conspiracy theories makes them feel special. That's my theory, anyway.

Mythbusters put a flag in a vacuum chamber and verified that there is nothing unusual about how the flag behaved. Especially since there is no air resistance to stop the flag from moving.

According to these folks, it didn't.

"The black and white images of Armstrong and Aldrin bounding around the moon were provided by a single small video camera aboard the lunar module."

"Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin, the first men to land on the moon, plant the U.S. flag on the lunar surface. Photo was made by a 16mm movie camera inside the lunar module, shooting at one frame per second. NASA file"

The camera was removed from the LM and later set up on a tripod 30ft away to capture the remainder of the moonwalk. Do you not believe the image that you posted as well?

"The reason that the picture is upside down is that the camera was mounted upside down on the MESA. Each of the tracking stations had the capability of inverting the image so it would look normal. This was done by throwing a switch from the 'normal' position - used when the camera was on its tripod away from the LM and was, therefore, rightside up - to the 'inverted' position - used when the camera was upside down on the MESA. As John Sarkissian relates below, the Goldstone switch hadn't been set to 'inverted'. The HSK feed linked above is correctly oriented because the HSK switch was in the proper position."

I also agree with her comment that the Moon Hoax CT is a "better class" of CT than most. For a start it's hard to check. You can't just nip outside with binoculars and look for the footprints; (and the current photos as shown on BAUT won't convince anyone but a believer).....
They brought back Moon rocks that scientists can and have verified and I'm sure some of those were shared (or loaned to) with the Russians among others who would have no reason to lie about their findings. I don't see how this CT is any less easy to verify than all the other absurd CTs.

Which I see Alt+F4 already noted:
Indeed. In addition, moon rocks were shared with scientists throughout the world and not one, ever suggested they came from anyplace else other than the moon.

Of course the photo is legit. I didn't believe that you were correct when you inferred that the video images of Armstrong/Aldrich together were all shot from a tripod. Whoopie is always wrong.

Barbara Walters used to be one of the most respected names in journalism. This woman could have sit downs with presidents, popes and captains of industry.

Why the hell does she put up with the crap from Whoopi, Rosie, Joy Beyhar, and the rest of those cackling idiots?....
You left out Elizabeth Hasselbeck, queen of the dittoheads.

Although I don't believe the CT, I can think of one semi-legitimate reason why NASA/the US would fake it. The US landed on the moon as part of the Space Race with Russia. I'm sure, for many CTers, getting a man on the moon before Russia did is a compelling reason for NASA to fake it.

However, this falls flat when you consider that beating Russia was not the only reason to put a man on the moon, the vast number of people who would have to keep quiet about it being faked, etc., etc.

And of course, if it was a compelling enough reason to fake it, it was a compelling enough reason to actually do it.

Yes, except that wasn't NASA aware of the Soviet unmanned moon program? So the Soviets never intended to set foot on the moon. And, as others have pointed out, Soviet scientists would likely have known if the Apollo missions never left Earth's atmosphere.

At any rate the conspiracy idea is nonsense. So we agree anyway.

Not too sure how I inferred that. I was merely joking around with you when I saw you edited your post to correct your mistake. You saw what was wrong and fixed it, and I was just trying to give you a hard time about it :boxedin:

I understand the irresistible temptation to catch an error before a post is edited. However, you did say:

Who shot the footage? Was she joking? Its called a tripod
Quad4_72

It is also called a video camera mounted in the LEM.
