Hokulele - kurious_kathy Book Challenge

Yes for unbeliever in Christ I realize that's your interpretation of it, but that does not prove you right either.

And all I can say to you if you choose to hate God, Maranatha! You only condemn yourself in doing so!!

What is so hard to comprehend regarding the fact that I do not hate your god? I simply lack belief in your god. I don't hate Yahweh any more than I hate Melkor or Darth Vader.

The abusive relationship illustration hadn't occured to me before JetLeg mentioned it, but now I can barely see anything else. It really does fit very, very well.

"God only smites me when he's angry and I deserve it..."

This was discussed in Kathy's previous gospel thread. She has posted that she WAS in a real abusive relationship. I believe Slingblade, myself and others commented that her relationship with god and her faith are virtually identical to those of a woman in an abusive relationship. She needs god. She deserves the punishments she has received. Why can't anybody else see how good he is?

If any one particular piece of suffering (ie a baby with a severe heart defect) has nothing to do with sin, how do you know that ANY suffering is to do with sin? How do you decide which is which?

Back up and let me ask you why you are judging me? I told Hokulele I would listen to the audio book and tell her what I thought when through. I did not intend for her to start a thread to put me on the spot when I agreed to do so, so I would appreciate it if you would realize I have already done more than I origianally agreed to which does NOT make me a liar at all. You need to be nice and stop getting on my case. I just do not see anything much good in this book and why exert more energy into something I do not feel compelled to do so for? I also gave up people pleasing a long time ago so please do not try pushing this. Thanks

Not only a liar but a whiny liar.

If you didn't intend to read the book why did you say you would? All Hokulele did was to take you at your word. Oh, yeah, and live up to hers, which is more than could be said for you.

Why do you judge people who are suffering from mental illness? As a matter of fact, why do you judge the whole world? That's what saying all suffering is caused by sin amounts to - you have judged the whole world and deemed them sinners and deserving of any amount of pain your God chooses to inflict on them.

Why "exert more energy"? Because you said you would. It's as simple as that.

Or show yourself to be a liar.

SUMMARY OF THE THREAD
Here's the deal that Hok had requested
In KK's latest thread, a challenge was made between her and me to read and respond to various articles and books on the Christian faith. Here is the context:

Here is a challenge to you (I offered something similar to Jesus Freak a few years ago). I will read and offer up an analysis of any and/or all the articles on Charlie's website if you read and offer up an analysis of a book of my choice. I have in mind Bart Ehrman's God's Problem: How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question — Why We Suffer. He comes from a strong evangelistic background, and he isn't an atheist, so you shouldn't have to worry on that account.

Deal? Or aren't you open-minded enough to follow your own advice?

Okay I will get the audio on that book and let you know what I think after I am finished.
[snip]
I would really like it if you would take your time while examaning the evidence and tell me if you can agree on some of it or all perhaps, or just some feedback would be nice.

I will be reading the articles she has linked and commenting on what is in them, and she will be reading the Ehrman book I listed in my post and commenting on it.
Here is your second afirmation of the deal.
Well I am purchasing the audio book today so hope to be getting back to you very soon with some of my comments and concerns. [snip]

Now as an example, I will only take except from Hok's first critique:
OK, I am reading the first article KK linked and here are my impressions:

The article waffles between evil, pain, and suffering. The author seems to assume that the three concepts are interchangeable, and never considers the idea of intent (as several posters here have already mentioned).

In the very first section, the author addresses the article to two different groups, skeptics, and those who are actually suffering. For the people who are currently experiencing pain and suffering, he suggests potential evangelists to the following:
Here, Hok breaks the article down into sections and addresses each in turn. She even quotes from it.

Hmm, nothing about actually helping those people. That sounds rather, er, evil.
Here she demonstrates the shallowness of the authors disection between arguing against those who suffer and those who are arguing about suffering in general.

Next Hokulele goes through all seven arguments that the author claims to address of athiests. I will only display the first as it is illustrative of what is meant by an analysis.
After that, he begins to address the skeptics with a list of questions and answers. I will address each one here:

1) “If God is the creator of everything, as you Christians suggest, and evil is something, then how can you say that God is not the one responsible for the existence of evil?”

Here is the argument.

His answer has already been quoted by a few posters, but basically he avoids the issue and states that evil isn't "something" and so claims that God could not create it. Well, God thinks he did:
Here she summarizes both the author's argument and why it is lacking. Hokulele proceeds to do this for each point. A detailed and clearly written analysis of an article and argument.
At the end she says she will return with a review of the other articles, which she had down and now waited for KK to do the same.

Here is KK's first comment on her book. She questions why he focuses on Suffering and then attacks the stability of his marriage. Notice no specific examples are made from the book. No single specific argument is addressed.
Well I am taking it slowly but my first thoughts are just that I feel sorry for the guy as I do not think he could have walked away from Christianity if he had ever had true saving faith. What denomination did he say he was? And then he mentioned his wife is still a believer so I wonder how they are doing it in their marriage? Unequally yoked is not easy as it does cause problems in many households. But he does not mention much about his personal relationships in this book being affected by his walking away from his once professing faith.

Then I just see how he is dwelling on too much of the wrong stuff which everyone knows whatever you focus on will affect you. If all you are looking at is the pain and how aweful it is for people then it will bring you down to a negative outlook. I can see that God was using all these things in peoples lives. He is God and has to deal with sin whether we like to hear it or not. And it may be that sometimes the sins of others have affected us somehow too in a bad way but God did not want that necessarily to happen. Can we really know if someone is suffering because of God's rath? What if it's just natural consequences??

Here KK repeats that suffering is because of sin, but does not address any aspect of the book which had dealt with this topic. Again, no clear indication that she even read the book. Simply generic statements.
I have listened to the audio book once all the way through and got through half a second time. I just do not have a hard copy to sit down and highlight to make tons of comments. I may need to get a hard copy but I honestly just get upset with the authors negative outlook on God throughout it. He doesn't account for all are sinners and that is a huge issue as God is just. People just don't like to agree with God sometimes even though he says all of us after the fall are deserving of hell because of sin. The reason for our suffering in this world is because of sin, that's it. Death is not something anyone looks forward to but lets face the facts it's a reality.

Here she claims that she kept her end of the bargain.
Yet, so far you have only made sweeping generalizations on suffering and personal attacks against Ehrman. There was not a single critique of Ehrman's arguments. She hadn't even stated what Ehrman's arguments were.
Hey Liz I have kept my end of the bargain I did the audio book and found it very depressing for this author who must have never had a true saving faith in God or he wouldn't have fallen away. Gods ways are not our ways they are much higher and the sooner people come to terms with the holiness of God the better. He's always right!

If you expect me to sit down and disect every little bit of that book forget it I have other things to do with my time. Ever heard the term garabage in garbage out? Well that's my analysis of his book, total negative garbage. And that's being nice. I just feel sorry for the guy as one day he will more than likely face his maker and hear those dreadful words, "depart from me for I never knew you."
Notice in this statement she claimed to have critiqued the book, yet give no indication was given that she even read it. Indeed, she challenged his christian credentials not knowing that he had presented this information in chapter 1.

Here are more personal attacks against Ehrman. Note the lack of critique of his arguments. Note the lack of restating what his argument is.
It's depressing because he does not get it. Jesus forgives sin but he did not say people wouldn't have consequences form it. Does it really help to focus on suffering? That's what's depressing about it, he has no faith nor do I believe he ever had or he could not have fallen away. I dread his outcome for writing this book and the bad influence he has been for others. He will one day have to be accountable to God as we all will.

From this, I can only assume that KK has not lived up to her end of the bargain. This isn't meant to insult only to illustrate the difficulty that exists in debates. If one party is unwilling to participate openly and honestly, then you don't have a debate at all.

I'd like to thank Hokulele for providing this opportunity to everyone and to thank her for her generous participation. Kurious_kathy, it's a shame that you did not do what you agreed to do.

I strongly suspect that Kathy never bought the book let alone read it. She probably picked up her vague complaints about the author and the author's position from some aplogetics website.

The whole "Kathy as an abuse victim" concept is very powerful. It is obvious now that it's been pointed out. She talks about how horrible she is (sinner) that she deserves punishment (pain from surgery) and that god is only trying to make her better (promise of salvation). It takes the fundamentalist christian concept into a whole new level of creepy.

Okay, once we get past the lame excuses, maybe we can accomplish something. But until then, let me leave you with this for you consideration...
Wow, what a post. I'm not current in my reading of this thread, I just wanted to comment that this is one of the best I have read on the religious forum.

I told Hokulele I would listen to the audio book and tell her what I thought when through.

I am just concerned that you may not have paid much attention when listening. You can set my fears to rest by answering a simple two-part question:

What is Ehrman's suggestion for a response to suffering in the real world, and what is your opinion of his suggestion?

I noticed that in her other thread.
I pointed out that that is what I find offensive about Christianity. That. Not the gospel.

However, I do think this discussion belongs over there, as it adds nothing but conflict to this thread, and distracts everyone from the purpose of this thread and Hokulele's insightful reviews.

Oh Please Liz, I did too listen to this audio book.
Would you like to see my audible book acct download for proof? And I am merely sharing my understanding with others and because they do not accept it I get put down for it. I do not like suffering anymore than anyone else does but everyone sure seems to be upset about it and blame God for it. I say it's a mistake to blame God. Is that being too judgemental? Tell me is it really me you are upset with or the message?

God is the only one who one day everyone will stand before and give account for their lives, doesn't that concern you at all? It sure does me. Please forgive me if I made you feel I was not being compassionate, this certainly is not my intent at all. I care very much about people who suffer and I am certainly no stranger to it myself.

And as for the mental health conversation I myself have had to deal with some things and found no real help using anti depressants. I went through over 10 years of counceling off and on and I was only disillusioned with that field. I am merely stating my own personal experience and convictions over this subject. If someone feels they are getting good care that way then I am happy for them. I was just very disappointed myself and thought overall something is really lacking in the field of psychology. I find much more peace and understanding now reading my Bible than I ever did going through years of counceling. God really does speak to us through his word if we are spirit filled believers.

Excuse me? Could you explain that again I am not following you at all. I was once outside of Christ and when he saved me he did pull me from the pit, what's so creepy about that? I guess I just shouldn't have admitted some of my bad past to you guys as you really can't see or understand how Jesus can and does change a person when he saves them. I'm not the person I once was but I'm still being transformed and becoming the woman God wants me to be. The song "Amazing Grace" sums it all up for my testimony.

Oh Please Liz, I did too listen to this audio book.
Your review of the book is sorely lacking. If you had read it, you show no understanding of what it was saying.

I know you consider this to be "attacking" you, but it isn't. It is only holding you accountable for the things you agree to. Responsibility for one's actions is not a minor point. But it seems clear that you do not view it as important. Indeed, your view of god supports a notion that personl responsibility of one's actions is not required. You suggest that acitons don't matter to god. Only our supplication to him. Well, I think your response in this thread demonstrates the type of behavior that that thought encourages.

We are all busy. We are all interested in the truth. Hokulele agreed to something with you, that took her time and care. She lived up to her end of the bargain, and so far You have not. This is purely a sign of disrespect for her from you.

NOw, I'd be happy to be wrong here. I hope that I am. The best way to prove me wrong would be to answer HOk's question above Please do that, otherwise my statements stand.

What is Ehrman's suggestion for a response to suffering in the real world, and what is your opinion of his suggestion?

How many times have you aksed that now. Is it four?

Kathy, I'd be really interested in your answer to this question.

Thank you for answering my previous post earlier in the thread.

I did too listen to this audio book. ... And I am merely sharing my understanding with others....

Please point out where you have shared your understanding of the audio book. Thank you in advance.

I was once outside of Christ and when he saved me he did pull me from the pit, what's so creepy about that?
The imagery for starters. Exactly which orifice does one enter Christ, and what were you doing in Christ's privy.
