Chávez: America Bad, Russia Good.

Assorted coups, invasions, messing with elections?
You mean like Venezuela supporting FARC in their efforts to overthrow the democratically elected government of Colombia?

Oh yes. No argument. There was the whole baby formula fiasco also (assuming that wasn't an urban legend. I just realized I have never checked). The scuttlebutt was that American baby formula companies in the 60's or 70's (IIRC) were selling powdered baby formula to poor women in Latin America and babies were getting sick because they were not yet ready to deal with the local water used to make the formula. Company owners knew of the problem but couldn't give up the profits.

From Wiki:
Quote:
Marketing of formula

Main articles: infant formula and Nestlé boycott
Beginning in the late 1970s Nestlé began to attract global criticism for its infant-formula marketing policies, especially those conducted in developing countries.
RandFan, Nestlé is a Swiss company.

You're in a tough position DC, to try to excuse Chavez for allying himself with a country with an even more corrupt history than the US.

But it's entertaining watching you go.

He hasn't tried yet. He's just made one line pot shots at the US.

Forget Afghanistan. The Poles, The Finns, the Czechs, in fact just about every country in Eastern Europe could tell you about how respectful of other country's sovereignty Russia is.

im not sure why you belive i would defend it, actually i posted already what i think about it.
Its sick.
even i would prefer an US base above a russian one.
but hey, dont let that stop you from trying to paint me a russia apologist.

btw, do you have a source that would backup your claim that they had a more CORRUPT history than the US?

What I am saying is that south and central americans have good reason not to trust america too much.

You can claim that Columbia/Venezuela have a bloddy and complicated relationship and that neither is run by saints. I would accept that.

What bothered me was Randfan´s writing off of decades of invasions, coups and subversion as just a overzelous but well intended fight against communism.

Pardalis,

I think you miss the point, Russia is not a nice guy, but it will provide a balance agains the US.
And that is something Chavez needs.

Chávez says yes to Russian base

Putin's Navy, Chávez's Ambition, and the Caribbean Adventure

Putin, Chavez Meet for Talks

Never mind the former empire's human rights abuses and murder during the cold war. Never mind that the former empire annexed half of Europe and helped separate families at the point of a gun. Never mind that the former empire directly murdered or starved to death tens of millions and imprisoned tens of millions more.

Ok, so the Soviet Union is no more and perhaps for that reason we can give Russia a pass that others are not willing to give the United States. What of Chechnya and the abuse of power and human rights of Chechnyan citizens? Also, while Russia retains some socialism it is by no means a socialist utopia nor is it moving in the direction of pure socialism. But Chávez calls on Obama to move to socialism while keeping mum about Russia. (claim withdrawn see below)

So, political expediency? Shades of Nixon and Sun Tzu (the enemy of my enemy...)?

If so I guess that's fine so long as his sycophants understand that the ideology of Chávez is by no means pure. His hypocrisy in this regard is naked and undeniable. Painting America out to be the greatest threat to humanity while getting all misty eyed with Russia and ignoring regimes like North Korea and China that threatens war over Taiwan, nations like Iran, Turkey and other Muslim nations that have almost no human rights for citizens demonstrates the lie that Chávez is simply interested in human rights and the advancement of socialism for the good of humanity.

And no, none of this excuses American abuses and crimes. What America has done wrong it deserves condemnation for. But to be sure it has done much right. Including not annexing Japan or East Germany or any part of Europe. It includes moving much of Europe to liberal democracy that has led to favorable conditions including healthy mixes of capitalism and socialism and most importantly, freedom.

Too bad South America remains our biggest misadventure.

Every country has bad history bro.

The USA is the only country to use nuclear weapons offensively. That is bad. Right now russia is thinking about getting on a gold standard while the United states is debating on whether Marijuana should be legal and nationalizing banks! Russia is acting better than the US right now. America is a communist country! AMERICA is the one at war with Afghanistan right now! They switched roles. It's like freaky friday!

Russia invading Afghanistan in 1979 was a good thing?

What's that thing about people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones? Or something like that?

The United states has supported terrorist regimes all throughout the world. They supported dictators in Indonesia and are responsible for the murder of millions upon millions of brown people over the past 60-70 years. You are in no moral authority to say anything. When people in Russia do something atrocious, you keep your mouth shut! You can't say anything! You are the LAST people to speak! Sweden can speak. Tonga can speak. You keep quiet!

It was for the U.S.

wiki said:
Carter advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski stated: "According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the mujahideen began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan, December 24, 1979. But the reality, secretly guarded until now, is completely otherwise." Brzezinski himself played a fundamental role in crafting US policy, which, unbeknownst even to the mujahideen, was part of a larger strategy "to induce a Soviet military intervention." In a 1998 interview with Le Nouvel Observateur, Brzezinski recalled: "We didn't push the Russians to intervene, but we knowingly increased the probability that they would...That secret operation was an excellent idea. It had the effect of drawing the Soviets into the Afghan trap...The day that the Soviets officially crossed the border, I wrote to President Carter. We now have the opportunity of giving to the Soviet Union its Vietnam War.

It'll sure be funny to watch the Chavez fanclub try to rationalize this support for such a corrupt country as Russia. Sure America has some problems and the usual Anti-American crowd likes to complain and point the finger at anything that comes up here and there, but Russia is way beyond anything the US has ever known as far as corruption and undemocratic shemes. It's corrupt times 1000 compared to the US.

Hee hee! Is that the US whose institutionalized financial corruption and rampant banksterism brought the world’s financial system to its knees?

Corrupt US power is crumbling rapidly. Its reputation is in tatters on multiple fronts . Russia is taking up the baton of responsible world leadership now that the US financial criminal delinquency has been so starkly exposed.
