Was Christopher Columbus obsessed with the Bible

I'm probably not going to respond to any more derails. Take the topic to the thread it came from and I might respond to it if I get the time.
Fingers crossed

This 'Western Hemisphere' that you mention... where are its borders?
Either answer my exceedingly simple question or admit that you are a stoopid creationist liar

Well, just for the record, you are the one who revived this thread.

When I think of the Western Hemisphere I think of North, South, and Central America.

So; Colombia, with its drug lords and the US's ongoing war on drugs, Nicaragua, with its ongoing civil war,
Honduras, where the police shoot homeless children,
and the US, with its drug, gang and gun crime problems, are peaceful are they?

And that's just the most obvious current problems.

The US itself has been through the English-French war, the war of independence, and the civil war, all of which were extremely brutal and bloody, resulting in huge loss of life, not to mention the atrocities visited on the native population by the good christian folk (although we all know your take on that little episode).

Most of Central America was a war zone through the 70s and 80s, Argentina was a very dangerous place to be for a large part of this century, Chile saw a brutal dictator running death squads. I could keep going for page after page of this stuff.

The list of wars, both civil and international, that have plagued the Americas since the introduction of christianity is long and bloody, and they haven't finished yet.

So, yeah, really peaceful, this Western hemisphere you've defined.

Well, just for the record, you are the one who revived this thread.
Ten out of ten for observation

Minus several gazillion for relevance

The entire Western Hemisphere (including Native Americans) are now enjoying peace because of the dangerous voyages of the quasi-Christian explorers.
I knew you were talking bollocks

When I think of the Western Hemisphere I think of North, South, and Central America.
Thank you

Now we know how big those bollocks are

Who has more civil liberties, the people in atheistic Russia and China, the people in Muslim Saudi Arabia and Iran, or the people in the mostly Christian USA and Great Britain.

I have a suspicion that the less Christian we become, the less "overall" civil liberties we will have. World History bears that out. And remember the founder of the ACLU was a Communist. Do communists have greater civil liberties??

Not sure if anybody pointed this out but civil liberties, freedom, education, and income correlate positively with secularization.

I've pointed as much out in the Can Atheists Be Good Citizens? thread... but maybe DoC skipped my posts

Yes, but the top seven in your list would more than likely be flying a swastica or a rising sun on their flagpoles now if it wasn't for the Christian US and Great Britain.

Utterly irrelevant to the discussion.

What's a Christian us? Did they fight in the war along side the United States?

Also, Why did you avoid mentioning Russia?

So then the best way to not throw your life away would be destroying empires. We are after all still talking about Attila the Hun and Alexander the Great. So all you need to do is find a way to become remembered with a middle name of the.

Or the first name of "The"...not only are we still talking about The Emperor Chin, they named a whole country after him.

If Colombus was so great, why are we named after his navigator?

Colombus was so beloved that they rejected the idea to name the US and the contenent it's on after his navigator and chose Ol' Chris instead....

Purely in the interests of accuracy, Amerigo Vespucci wasn't Columbus' navigator - he was a cartographer who was a contemporary of Columbus but I don't think there's any evidence they ever sailed together.

I may be wrong, but wasn't it the Americans who started the practice of scalping, in order to prove how many Indians they'd killed for the bounty?

Don't know if this is revisionist or not, but:

North America

According to ethnohistorian James Axtell, there is abundant evidence that the Native American practice of scalping existed long before Europeans arrived. Axtell argues that there is no evidence that the early European explorers and settlers who came to the Americas were familiar with the ancient European practice of scalping, or that they ever taught scalping to Native Americans. Axtell writes that the idea that Europeans taught scalping to Native Americans became popular recently, during the 1960s. This idea quickly became conventional wisdom because it fit the tenor of the times of the counter-cultural 1960s, writes Axtell, but he argues that archaeological, historical, pictorial, and linguistic evidence contradicts this notion. Certain tribes of Native Americans practiced scalping, in some instances up until the 19th century.

Both Native Americans and American frontiersmen frequently scalped their victims in this era. It is believed that contact with Europeans widened the practice of scalping among Native Americans, since some Euro-American governments encouraged the practice among their Native American allies by offering bounties for scalps during times of war.

Examples of the payment for scalps are those issued by the government of Massachusetts in 1744 for the scalps of Indian men, women, and children; Governor Edward Cornwallis' proclamation of 1749 to settlers of Halifax of payment for Indian scalps; and French colonists in 1749 offering payments to Indians for the scalps of British soldiers.

In the Revolutionary War, Henry Hamilton, the British lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada, was known by American Patriots as the "hair-buyer general" because they believed he encouraged and paid his Native American allies to scalp American settlers. When Hamilton was captured in the war by the colonists, he was treated as a war criminal instead of a prisoner of war because of this. However, American historians have conceded that there was no positive proof that he had ever offered rewards for scalps.[1] It is now assumed that during the American Revolution, no British officer paid for scalps.[2]

Famously, General Custer was not scalped after the Battle of Little Big Horn because he was deemed "a great chief."[3]

In Canada, a 1756 British proclamation issued by Governor Charles Lawrence offering a reward for scalps has yet to be officially repealed.[4]

And cannibalism would probably be going on too. I don't know about the human sacrifice.

Which brings up an interesting question from another thread: what about the symbolic cannibalism of the eucharist?

Antitheists form a subset of all atheists.

Well, not exactly. You can't be "anti" something you don't believe exists. What you're saying sounds analogous to, "I'm against square circles."

Well, I hope you're well rested, for I predict that the logical gymnastics that he'll put forth will be worthy of V.S. Ramachandran's study.

I'm really glad some of you are saying Hitler was a Christian. I really do hope you'll keep it up because it says a lot about you and your side.

Now I realize Columbus was no angel but at least he added tremendously to the progress of humanity, whereas Hitler came very close to sending humanity into a dark abyss.

You also have to wonder why Roosevelt and Churchill sang "Onward Christian soldiers" with naval officers on a ship at the very beginning of the war if they were fighting a fellow Christian.

...and he comes out with a front walkover and a two-and-a-half twist, finishing off with an Arabian dive roll and a back handspring, Dave! And the judges are giving him tens across the board!

It ain't symbolic

According to RC dogma, communion is the consumption of the actual flesh and blood of jeebus

see:forums.randi.org \ Rod Dreher smacks down P.Z. \ post #298

If you want to know the RC churches position, forget wikipedia and go straight to the horse's mouth... or arse... or wherever it is that pontifications ooze out

Fairy nuff

This thread is (or was ;)) about Columbus, though... and he was a catholic

After his "discovery" of "Montserrat", which probably saved his life, (fresh water 'n all) did God tell Columbus of its growth from the sea, and its future vengeance upon the unbeliever? I doubt it.

Yes, but the top seven in your list would more than likely be flying a swastica or a rising sun on their flagpoles now if it wasn't for the Christian US and Great Britain.

As wollery noted, your drivel is irrelevant

What is relevant is that you are still lying for jeebus... and making an absolute mess of it too

Wouldn't it be so much easier (and in keeping with the dogma attributed to your sky-daddy) to simply tell the truth and admit that, as you are both ignorant and scared of reality, you are hell bent on peddling your delusional woo
