Warm Fuzzies About TAM6

I had warm fuzzies until I realized I didn't actually interact with half the people who have posted to this thread so far and only had glancing blows with another 2 or 3 of you. :(

Articulette gave me a hug FFS!

Speaking of warm fuzzies, thanks for letting us know you were going commando, articulett.

I feel all sad and happy and dewey-eyed and glowy. I probably feel like those people who go to "religious encounters" etc. feel. And I'm a skeptic, dammit!

(btw, I was only intermittently commando... I was not brave enough to be commando with a couple of outfits... I will leave all speculation to your imagination. I will say that your closed eyes of bliss appear to be well founded, grayman.)

Time speeds up during TAM and really slows down back at work....there is never enough time to meet everyone...

I just got home... Well, my first TAM rocked. Although I was also underwhelmed by hotel. The speakers and the cool people totally made up for the lameness of my room.

Words and stuff,
Big Frankie

For my first time at TAM, I have to say it sucked! It sucked that I didn't get to say hi to everyone. It sucked that I am memorially challenged and can't keep all the names and faces straight of those amazing ones that I did get to meet. It sucked that I totally kept forgetting to get a camera. It sucked that I had to fly home Sunday morning. It sucks that it is over. Seriously, you all are amazing, it was absolutely amazing and I totally overdosed on the warm fuzzies. Everyone at work is asking me about my smile and it sucks that I don't have the right words to express to them how amazing it all was. Thank you. Namaste.

Oh ye of little Riviera experience. The Flamingo was a palace (in comparison). At least my room was. Your mileage may vary.

On our flight back to Denver, I sat three rows behind Phil Plaiit and kept thinking, "Does anyone else one this plane (besides my wife and Dumb All Over) realize who that man is and what he has contributed to science education?".

And Phil sat up there thinking, "That weird guy from TAM is still following me."

We were on the same flight with the skeptical rogues...a similar vibe.

Giving up lurking

I'd like to agree that TAM 6 was wonderful. I learned a lot and enjoyed the feeling of being with like-minded folks. Maybe I'll overcome my shyness and actually try to introduce myself to people other than those who sat next to me in the sessions--although they were all very nice.

I will also try to actually engage in this forum rather than just lurking. In that spirit, let me say that all the speakers were good, but my favorite was probably Dr. Tyson. I had never heard him speak before! I didn't know what I was missing!

Yup. The worst thing about TAM...is that it's over way too soon.

And me too, I was still too shy to go up to the forum folks that I recognized, and only spoke to 2 or 3 very nice people. It didn't help that I was with 2 non-forumites. Maybe next year I will abandon them for longer periods of time.

Thanks to a nice gentleman named Marty who offered to take a photo of me and Phil together.

And, wow, Neil Degrasse Tyson was stellar! What a truly awesome speaker.

Did anyone else notice the John Edward promotional poster in the hotel lobby? My wife had to physically restrain me from scrawling the word "FRAUD" across that ugly forehead late last night with my trusty black Sharpie. :-) It's just as well, we didn't care too much for the Flamingo and are glad TAM is moving to another venue next year.

Duly noted. Some of us made our feelings known :)

The worst day of the year is the first day back at work after TAM.

Well said. Depression set in around 4pm.

For you guys who were too shy to say hello to people because you were new to TAM or new to the forum, for serious, do it next time! No excuses.

Cool things:

Being there

The Slammer tour (yes, it was worth it)

Hal Bidlack, for many many things

The long conversation with the Canadian couple who were very pro-American and quite concerned about our future

Corralling PZ Myers and Ben Goldacre for dinner on Friday with Miss_Kitt and I

The dazed look on Ben Goldacre's face after he went to the shooting range with PZ.
He's from England and had never even SEEN a gun before, much less fired a machine gun...

Buying jewelry Slingblade made

Making myself be more social than is customary for me

Marvelling at the $2400 bar tab for Quark's

Lots of SkepChicks

The Sunday papers. Last time I didn't attend them, this time I saw most of them; they're worth it.

Not having to wait 18 months for the next full TAM

Not so cool:

Outside temperatures of 100+ degrees

Missing some talks due to inability to be in two places at once and the long distances between things -- I blame our restrictive 4-dimensional space-time continuum.

Not meeting many of the interesting posters here.

All-too-briefly meeting Forum posters

My friend HistoryGal could not attend this year

Not being even more social

The Sunday papers being at the very end of TAM; not much chance to tell the presenters how much you liked them or buy them dinner

Not scheduling time to go on the Guns & Nukes tour on Sunday

Hold on a second. I've been a member of the forum since Aug. 2001 and attended TAM 1-3 and TAA2 and was too shy to introduce myself to people who didn't recognize me. Attendees should try and overcome shyness, but it is an excuse IMO.

I can't tell you how many times I found myself at the Garden Bar as the only American in the group at our table... and I loved it.

Buying jewelry Slingblade made

Don't know how many people noticed it, but I changed my usual gold hoop for a lapis stud that Slingy made just for me.

Marvelling at the $2400 bar tab for Quark's

I wasn't there and I'm not the only one who was not that marvelled at the printout for the tab.

My friend HistoryGal could not attend this year

X2. :(

Fuzzy? --- Check

Extremely worn out? --- Check

Saganite, we spoke briefly at the party, and I think that's all the interaction we had all weekend. Sadly, I can say that same thing about most everyone at the conference. Not easy to get quality time with over 900 people during the blur that is TAM.

Still, I enjoyed even the snippets. Rock on!
