BTW, is your name really Lilith
no
or did you take that from "Lillywhite Lilith"
(Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down")
nope
Just a name I heard a long time ago that I liked, and so I use it now and then for things like this.

Lilith, I can't make out your bird very well but can you google for Buteo Jamaicensis and see if it's a match?
I think you could attract them with a decent pitcher and a hitter or two.I hear ya - but its tail wasn't red, and another passer-by who may or may not have known much about birds commented that it wasn't a red-tailed hawk. I''m not convinced on any particular hawk yet, but have ruled several out. Could have been a young hawk which might throw me off on the id-ing?
Thanks. Sorry the pics are so blurry. Who'da-thunk I'd happen upon such a great bird between the parking deck and my office?
Oh, and the Chipping Sparrow has been around lots, and I'm pretty darn sure it is one. I have a pic (a decent one), but don't want to bore everyone with every picture I get.
Now - my fiance/house-mate is kinda getting into this bird-watching thing with me, and his interest would be further cemented by attracting Baltimore Orioles which should be in our area - is a Hummingbird Feeder going to do the trick, or should I be more specific?
Feel free to pass on any pics you wish to show us and I'll post them to the Gallery section of this thread's webpage (link in my sig).I...Thanks. Sorry the pics are so blurry. Who'da-thunk I'd happen upon such a great bird between the parking deck and my office?

OK - here is what I think is a Chipping Sparrow that has been frequenting our backyard daily. I've listened to its song and compared it with web audio files, and it sounds like the Chipping Sparrow and not similar sparrows. I am posting the pics because I don't yet see it on the Forum Gallery of Birds. I wish I had film in my old Pentax K-1000 with my 200 zoom lens. I'd get some really really nice pics. I may have to splurge on a more expensive digital camera just for this new hobby.

Oh - and I'm starting to be convinced that the hawk I saw was indeed a Red-Tailed Hawk. Unless it was a Ferruginous Hawk, which isn't listed as being native to this area.
I've added that to the Forum's List - you'll be delighted to know that it is the first one on the list!OK - here is what I think is a Chipping Sparrow that has been frequenting our backyard daily.
I'll wait until you've sorted the ID on that one before I add it to the list.Oh - and I'm starting to be convinced that the hawk I saw was indeed a Red-Tailed Hawk. Unless it was a Ferruginous Hawk, which isn't listed as being native to this area.
Hi all,
I'm presently at a PhD course, and will comment and add more when I get back home on Friday. However, I am delighted that the thread finally starts generating questions about identification, something I thought would be much more prevalent when I started the thread. We have too many experts here, apparently^^.
I can add Striated Flycatcher Muscicapa striata here yesterday, though, so I'm not entirely idle.

I'm not sure I understood this, did you mean you have two pictures of the same individual and you're not sure which species it is?
What were the biometrics?
Did you consider the fuscus race of reed warbler?
Quick one - was it this week that you wanted me to pick up the sightings from the Forum for you? If so - I'll do it, 'cos I have a reformat of the Excel spreadsheet for you.
Not that I'm complaining, but it shouldn't have been. I'm pretty sure I reported chipping sparrows fairly early in the year. But Lilith's are better documented.
Can do June and only 1 week off in Sept so will be able to catch up....No, but from the 23rd and onwards, at least until the middle of July, I'd appreciate it. And then again between the end of August and the middle of October.
Any chance of putting the species in "normal" order rather than alphabetical? Can do June and only 1 week off in Sept so will be able to catch up.
Will hope to revamp the webpages to make them a little more interactive by then, too.
Er... um... no reason why not. Anyone know of a definitve listing with order/family/species , er, order? This? No doubt Kotatsu will have an idea.Any chance of putting the species in "normal" order rather than alphabetical?
I reported them Jan. 4, but see from that post that it may have been a little ambiguous whether I had actually seen them at that point.
Apologies, Kotatsu![]()

Walked out the door and spotted a neighborhood Javan Kingfisher (Halcyon cyanoventris) this morning. Pretty bird
