"Expelled Exposed" - New and Improved!

In retrospect, I think I unnecessarily hard on Randy Olson. I take back my comments and apologize. However, I still disagree with his assessment of "Expelled" box office "success."

To put it into context, the producers of "Expelled" claimed that the movie would be a success if it had 2 million viewers and made $10-12 million in its first weekend. As it stands, they're attempting (for obvious reasons) to redefine "success" over at the Panda's Thumb blog...

http://pandasthumb.org/archives/2008/04/expelled-the-fi.html

Incidentally, the final weekend numbers have solidified, and it seems that "Expelled" did worse than we thought - it didn't even make $3 million :D

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?sortdate=2008-04-18&p=.htm

I predict that this bowser will be on only about 550-600 screens this coming weekend, if that many. And practically none the weekend after that.

Wow, nothing spells "success" like L-O-S-E-R!!!

Thanks for the link, I enjoyed reading the site.

I was just continually amazed while reading about the 'expelled'. Over and over again, these people act like douches, doing things continually that SHOULD get them fired, or let go... and they NEVER do. They all stay employed.

Who gets fired? Christine Comer. What kind of bizarro world do we live in when the IDiots get Christine Comer fired, and then make a docudrama about THEMselves being fired instead?

Sadly, a world full of theists.

Since when do theists of the world support this?

If you want to criticize, criticize the right people. But don't lump in theists of the world with ID'ers. That is precisely as narrow-minded and bigoted as what Creationists do, when they lump in Darwinists with Nazis.

Just as religious people of the world don't support religious terrorists, theists of the world don't support critics of ID being fired, ID or this movie.

Are you saying it wasn't theists and/or pressure from theists that got Comer fired?

What do you mean don't lump theists in with IDers? Who is it you think supports ID?

I can buy your argument except for one thing, the theists that don't support Comer getting fired weren't exactly sticking up for her either.

Are there any posters / flyers for Expelled Exposed? I ask because some IDiot has posted Expelled posters ALL over our biology lab building on campus, and I want to put Expelled Exposed flyers right next to all of them.

ETA: never mind, just found out it is against the rules and they will likely be taken down within the day.

Better yet, do what I did at my school.

One day last year someone posted an advertisement in the faculty mailroom for an "inspirational" talk by a noted author at a local church. Upon closer reading, this was really just a way of proselityzing to the teachers... "Come get to know Jesus", "Bring Him into your heart", etc.

Rather than take down the offending poster or complain about it, I decided to fight fire with fire. I printed out and posted right next to it a flyer for the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster...

Within a day both were gone :D

It's not so black-and-white. While most IDers are theists, not all theists are IDers. Not to mention, there actually are some atheists who actively promote ID... for example, the Raelians.

ETA: The Raelians don't think that God is The Designer... they think that a race of space aliens with advanced technology are The Designers. Seriously.

One thing that someone* might consider doing is seeding fake copies of Expelled on bit torrent. On one hand, it might actually help prevent rampant piracy of expelled on bit torrent because no one can get a legitimate copy, on the other hand it keeps people from seeing the movie.

So how do you guys feel about this? Share real copies to drive down profits or share fake copies to decrease viewing? I guess I kinda feel like file sharing can increase the overall popularity of something in a viral way and ultimately help the producer of the film so stopping effective file sharing is probably an effective way to resist the movie's silliness.

* I'm not trying to suggest that I know anyone who would be so unscrupulous as to do this, but just theoretically. ;)

I wouldn't worry about it. I think this thing is DOA. It'll be gone from most theaters by this coming weekend.

I think the true value in YouTubing or bittorrenting the movie will come from the inevitable parodies! :D

That's ridiculous, everyone knows "The" Designer is Giorgio Armani.

It would be so ironic if the producers of Expelled were reduced to blaming post-religionists for killing revenues by bootlegging the movie. Copying it is just wrong in any case. I don't even think I will rent it. I may borrow it from the library for free though.

I was in a bad mood when I posted that. I am aware not all theists are IDers. But there are an awful lot of theists trying to shove religion down people's throats right now because they are threatened by the facts. But the fact are what they are. These people need to get over it.

And yet, you repeat it, 12 hours after you first claimed it? You sure are in a bad mood for a long time!

That's another discussion. Don't throw out wild generalizations, designed to vilify a whole group of people that doesn't share the beliefs of the one we are discussing here, ID'ers.

I don't know if the statement about "an awful lot of theists..." is such a wild generalization. I feel like thats fair to say. IMO there are. Dhe doesn't say 'ALL theists' or even 50% of theists. I guess it all depends on how you interpret 'an awful lot'

Even one of them is sort of awful, don't you think? ;)

NEWS ALERT!!!

Yoko Ono has sued the creators of Expelled for copyright infringement:

http://www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSN2320158220080423

I can’t wait to see how this plays out in court - and when Yoko is finished with the makers of Expelled, whatever is left will likely be mopped up by the Harvard/XVIVO lawsuit :)

from article
"We are disappointed therefore that Yoko Ono and others have decided to challenge our free speech right to comment on the song 'Imagine' in our documentary film," they said in a statement.

These people have no shame or integrity at all...none.

Now that is cool because it really did piss me off when they played John Lennon's, "Imagine", over pictures of Stalin.

If you ask me, Ono is just exercising her free speech right to protest that insult to Lennon.

Does anyone know how much money they spent on expelled? Despite the fact that it didn't gross much, is it in the black?(Ignoring lawsuits)
