"Expelled Exposed" - New and Improved!

I'll be going either tomorrow night or Monday during the day. I can't imagine I'll enjoy sitting through it all, but I'll persevere.

Go with someone you can laugh with. It was very tedious by the end, I kept hoping it was finally over and Stein would go on with yet one more redundant segment.

Metacritic's Expelled page (Metacritic is a site where you see all the published movie reviews in one place. Expelled is currently averaging 28/100 based on 10 reviews. That's slightly better than '88 Minutes,' the new Al Pachino movie, but still pretty darn bad.

First, I'm happy to say that on opening night in the suburbs of Seattle at 9:50pm on Friday night, Expelled played to an almost empty theater. A third of the audience was our own group of 13 skeptics.

OMG.
You are helping to make the movie more successful than it deserves to be.

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and buy that loony video or borrow that woo book from the library or whatever so you can at least see/read it yourself first hand. I don't think 13 people are going to make that much of a difference in overall box office.

Kudos to sg for going and for taking a support group. I don't plan on seeing it until it's availible on Netflix and I plan on drinking heavily while doing so. :D

Well, the site may be "improved", but it doesn't entice me to click past the second link (any link after the home page).

A list of claims and names is not the best way to get people to click through your site. And it just looks like a list -- links are traditionally underlined. A synopsis under each link might be in order to prod people to seek more.

Why should we support this at all?
If you buy a ticket to go see it, don't they win?
If you go to a multiplex, you can buy a ticket to a different movie and slip into the Exposed showing without contributing. I went to see what it put forth in order to be be able to respond.

I must credit our wonderful skeptic group organizer, Case, for "taking the support group". But indeed, I went for the very reason you cite, to be able to reply to people who see this propaganda movie and believe any of it.

I agree with people declining to go on the basis of not supporting this really bad movie. Just PM me or ask in this thread, and I'll be happy to address anything anyone brings up re the movie if you would like to reply but haven't seen it.

And, unless you are interested in propaganda techniques like I am, it really was boring by the end of the movie.

Me too. Some of us have to bite the bullet and actually walk into the lions den otherwise our criticisms are third or fourth hand. It's good to have a first hand source and thanks for feeling the pain for us. :)

Looks to me like Expelled has tanked... I found the numbers on its opening weekend performance at

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?sortdate=2008-04-18&p=.htm

Wow, the "box office smash" that is Expelled has scored a whopping 8th place in that list. This amazingly popular movie chock full of "truth" has done worse in its opening weekend than Prom Night (second weekend), 21 (fourth weekend), Nim's Island (third weekend), and Street Kings (second weekend).

Not only that, but as far as the numbers for movies out on their first weekend, Expelled is at the bottom of the list.

Can you spell "Loser"?

Of course, this is just Phase One of Ben Stein and company's inevitable crash and burn. Just wait until the legal troubles start with the lawsuits for copyright infringement.

Of course, we all know that its all just part of that nasty "Darwinist conspiracy", right?

If you want to see some of the crazy-ass spin the creationists are putting on these numbers, take a look at this blog post on the Panda's Thumb...

http://pandasthumb.org/archives/2008/04/expelled-the-fi.html

There's a whole lot of arm-flapping and hand-waving going on there by the creationists. Hoo-boy!!! :D

ETA: Oh, and don't forget... Ben Stein has jumped-the-couch!!!

Strangely, Randy Olson (the fellow behind "A Flock Of Dodo's") at Shifting Baselines has the exact opposite take, claiming that a $3 Million first weekend take equals a huge success for the Creationists and that the pro-science side is "not good with mass communication, and that the people behind the attacks on evolution are VERY, VERY good."

He then goes on to belittle the efforts of others to combat "Expelled:"

To counter the blockbuster power of "Expelled," the National Science Foundation, NAS and AAAS are organizing a panel discussion about putting together a committee to look into the possibility of creating a brochure that tells the public how to make a website for a petition that says evolution is fun.

That should probably take care of the problem.
Right Randy, and what have you done in your documentary to dispel Creationism other than play cards with fundies and crap on your own side for not being PR savvy?

I hope their server doesn't melt!

Instapundit linked to it - he linked to a review of the movie, so I emailed him and told him about Expelled Exposed, and he linked to that too. :)

Little Green Footballs linked to it (prompting a 2000-comment-and-counting flame war).

And now Slashdot.

Thanks for the link, I enjoyed reading the site.

I was just continually amazed while reading about the 'expelled'. Over and over again, these people act like douches, doing things continually that SHOULD get them fired, or let go... and they NEVER do. They all stay employed.

Who gets fired? Christine Comer. What kind of bizarro world do we live in when the IDiots get Christine Comer fired, and then make a docudrama about THEMselves being fired instead?

Sadly, a world full of theists.

Congratulations, everybody! The Expelled Exposed site now appears immediately below the sites for the movie itself in google searches for "Expelled".

Nicely done, and keep it up. Maybe we can get it up above the official site for the movie!

In retrospect, I think I unnecessarily hard on Randy Olson. I take back my comments and apologize. However, I still disagree with his assessment of "Expelled" box office "success."
