I Am Soul

Hey! Don't you call my belittling "petty". My belittling is masterful! :D

Seriously though, I don't mind swapping jabs with a person who wants to flame, but I try to mirror the tone of the poster I'm talking with. I'm a nice guy when I'm talking to nice guys. I'm a jerk when I'm talking to jerks. Hokulele would probably say I've been putting in some overtime on the jerk job.

Then why aren't you masterful, witty, insightful, and brilliant when responding to me?

If you put as much effort into your posts as your "jerk job" . . .

Then why aren't you masterful, witty, insightful, and brilliant when responding to me?
I'm savin' it up. When it comes, you're gonna be blown away.
Darlin, I jerk you ever chance I get. Why doncha appreshiate me more? Seems like I'm doin' the heavy liftin' here.

I said preparation…you know…what do you take when you sail a ship into the unknown?
You take what you think you might need.
Not the same thing. When you sail into unknown waters, what is unknown is just where your are. Waters are known. What you need to survive at sea is known. Winds and currents, while different, are known. You can prepare for the known.

I In the case of being prepared, it is about my acceptance of the possibility that I might still exist…what might the situation be, based on what I have already experienced?
I have additional knowledge with the experiences I have had.
I can choose to ignore it altogether or for the sake of some semblance of normality, I can block it out…nope, I can’t.
I am too curious.
Yes, you are basing your future existence on what you know of the present. Yet you fully acknowledge that things such as "experience" and "knowledge" are dependent on your corporal existence. How can you use them to predict or plan for what a future incorporeal existence would be like? Why do you think they would have any relationship at all?

Nope. Not at all…otherwise I might want my guitar, my worldly possessions and my slaves buried with me.
My body will feed the earth…well no, I am planning to donate it to science…or alternatively, be embalmed in epoxy resin and will that monument to my relations.
Having experienced what I have experienced, I am more interested in the consciousness I am than the aging body I am in.
Don't knock your aging body. It is the only vessel that you can count on housing your consciousness. But as for the dregs of what was once me, I agree with you. Let anyone who can find a use for it do what they will. It is unlikely that I will care.

Someone I used to think I knew, experienced multiple sexual abuse from the age of 8 until 14.
She told me that after awhile she disengaged with her sense of self as a way of not being there while the deed was being done.
When you told me of your OBEs, this remained me of what she had told me.
That is why I don’t think we had the same thing.
I am sure they are not identical, just as no two people's dreams are identical. But they are still identifiable as "dreams".

I am sorry about your friend. I have had friends (and relatives) who also suffered sexual abuse and blocked it out to the point of not remembering it at all until forced to by direct questioning. Yes, the mind can indeed do tricky things.

I have spoken with a person recently about voices in her thoughts. Sometime they are good – often they are not.
Meds help interrupt those realities.

I think it is possible that some people’s brains are wired in such a way that they are tuned into these voices.
Do you not think it possible that there are no voices, but that they are imagined by the brains? I've heard voices in my mind too. I realized that they were imaginary. Was I mistaken? Is your friend mistaken? Which is more likely, real voices that only a single brain could hear, or a single brain that imagined voices?

The possibility that they exist… We are speaking of something that is exceptionally hard to pin down into solid reality.
Aren't they though! :)

I do not think that it will happen any time soon. I am not ready to give myself over to a ‘professional’ to help me sort out my experiences. Maybe once upon a time, but you know what is said about necessity and invention.
I don't think you need a professional. You are more sane than most "spiritual" (if I may suggest the classification) people we get here. You probably function just fine in the real world, even if you long for another to exist. Really, belief in supernatural things is more common than denial of them. I don't think you need to worry about men in white coats.:D

I have experience stuff I know would have had a lot of folk running (even screaming) for the meds and other such help (even the church)…btw that is no Judgment or finger pointing statement…at you or anyone else.
I understand why folk DO ask for help. I didn’t (well I did, but it was useless) – so I faced the ‘demon’ and,,,well it gave me a heads up.
Took me a few years after the fact to sort out the details though.
Sounds like an interesting story. You can tell it if you are very brave. Feeding time at the skeptic cage is not for the faint of heart.

I never really thought about it too much Tricky. I have been thinking like this for awhile, so I have adapted. I think of things in relation to an overarching consciousness which tends to bind everything together, rather than thinking in terms of everything being separate and disconnected.
As a scientist, I don't believe anything is separate and disconnected. There are connections we barely recognize. But I don't think those connections can be reasonably described as "consciousness". It would require a re-definition of the word into something that would make no sense for most currently used applications. This is why I dislike using such terms for concepts to which they were not intended. I want to tell the New Agers, "Find your own damn words. Quit stealing ours."

So when I said “perfect” I wasn’t being totally sarcastic…
(any more than I am being totally cute)
That's okay. Sarcasm is a perfectly valid tool for such discussions. I use it all the time. I mostly wanted you to know that I understood your "humorous phrasing" and that it wasn't wasted on me.

Being fearful of being dead is silly.
Silly? That isn't the word I would use. I'd say "irrational". But humans are not always, or even often, rational.

Being afraid of the way you might die, that ain't so silly.
It is not. I've watched both my parents die. It was painful. It was scary. I fear that time when it comes for me. It is not, I think, an irrational fear.

Being fearful of still being around after the body has died, well THAT could be scary…you know – not really knowing what to expect and all.
Yes, I understand that too. As thinking creatures, it is almost unfathomable for us to conceive how it would be to not be able to think or use our minds at all. It is like trying to conceive of infinity. It is a concept that doesn't really register. So we must think of something that does register. "Thinking, but in another plane", fits the bill. It satisfies the mind, even if it has no evidence.

Another good reason for not wanting to contemplate possibilities – one could ‘go places’ .
LOL. It seems that "going places" would be fun. It is easy to contemplate that possibility. "Not going anywhere" is a possibility that is not nearly as fun to contemplate. As such, many people tend to ignore it, even though it has the most evidence.

A great reason to embrace nothingness.
Especially when life on Earth has shown the unpredictable nature of nature.
Nature is quite predictable in many aspects. Gravity works mostly all the time. Celestial movements follow a course that can be predicted centuries ahead of schedule. These things we learn from observable, objective evidence. That is why we skeptics like evidence so much. It provides a basis for predictability.

Who the heck embraces nothingness? Solipsists?

Oh well – the earth was flat once as far as beliefs went. I guess it took some kind of different person to step over the line and explore.
It wasn't skeptics who said that the earth was flat. They denied it and proved it wrong. They were always on the cutting edge.:D

That is why I don’t think what you experienced is what I did. Any kind of fear seems to inhibit the process, at least from my own experiences, I have found this to be so.
What process?
What evidence did you give to those who prescribed your meds that convinced them you were delusional?
My symptoms. OBEs were only one part of them. They never called me "delusional'. The medication was to prevent the panic attacks, not to prevent OBE's. Once the panic attacks diminished, so did the OBEs.

As I have said, the evidence is subjective.
Subjective evidence is not evidence. That's called "anecdotes".

There is no evidence which has been offered which can prove 100% that I have just experienced a brain delusion.
No, there is not, but then, the trick isn't to prove it is a delusion, the trick is to prove it is real. If you can't do that, then there is no reason to believe it is real. What is that word we use to describe things that people think are real but cannot provide evidence for? Starts with a "D"

Until there is, I am free to use what personal experience I have had, to develop my own kind of fun.
I sailed to the edge of that world and didn’t fall off.
I heartily encourage you to enjoy your trip and to send us pictures from the other side.

Breath = bated.

I tried back on page 1 of this thread, but then had to work for a living, and by the time I got back to this, it had exploded to 8+ pages and it did not seem appropriate to backtrack. You are doing just fine, but I may return to the fray should you falter. ETA: Apparently my memory is failing. It was pages 3-4 where I was being serious.

3... You cannot reasonably judge what you do not know, do not understand, or blindly deny.

Perfectly correct in regard to what I "do not know," but what is it I "do not understand"? What is it I "blindly deny"? Your unfounded bunkum? The pastiche of fantasy and faith you allude to again and again? Thanks. In these matters you "know" as much as any of us.

Skeptics have "mystical experiences" and wonder what the truth is behind them.

Woo have "mystical experiences" and never wonder if they might be misinterpreting them--they take it as proof of whatever it is they've come to believe.

Skeptics learn the truth by trying to disprove their beliefs.

Woo accepts their beliefs by looking for "signs" as proof that what they beliefs are true.

Just because the woo believes that they've really had out of body experiences or whatever-- doesn't give anyone else a reason to accept that this is so any more than it gives anyone a reason to accept a schizophrenic's delusion as fact. And the woo never seek to disconfirm their beliefs--they only seek information which confirms it as factual and never seem troubled by the fact that their beliefs are never demonstrable or testable while actual science is. If you have to "believe in" something for it to be true-- it probably isn't.

The shame of it is, that this is so true about many things people believe, "What check for the facts, no way, I want a magical world".

Hot weather thins the blood.

Gee, isn't that called being Anemic.

The shame of it is, that this is so true about many things people believe......

Such as the pseudo skeptical cult belief system that reductionist scientism explains the universe, and that anyone who challenges this tunnel visioned misconception is deluded!!!

Do you believe a first class magician is only using illusion to perform all his/her tricks?
Is there a way for you to disprove your belief about this?

Woo accepts their beliefs by looking for "signs" as proof that what they beliefs are true.

Wooman – is there a reason you cannot call those who are not skeptics “non-skeptics”?

If you have to "believe in" something for it to be true-- it probably isn't.

So test your beliefs to see if they can be disproved. Is this what you are saying?

I can't even tell what you are saying Navigator... to me you are like Maatorc and Tom Cruise... lots of words that say nothing-- some kind of messiah complex... imagines himself to have "special powers" and "higher truths". You guys are all the same kind of crazy from my perspective. I know that in your head you are saying something meaningful and clever, but to me it's the exact same "nothing". It's not just that you are "not skeptics"-- you ARE so.... woo-ish-- so self important.

Lots of people believe crazy things. But not as many try to pass off their woo as "higher truths" on skeptic forums. I reserve the term "woo" for those special folks that do. I mean it's all "woo" to me-- but unless you try to pass it off as "higher truths or decide to share your opinions of me with me-- I keep my opinions of "woo" within the skeptical community and those who visit such.

This has nothing to do with belief, it is only an illusion, daaaaaaaaaa.

Here again is the master-woo of the site saying her usual nothing.

I have only your own expression of yourself to go by. I think you are incorrect about me.
I conclude from the way you express things that you have been seriously effected emotionally (and perhaps in other ways) by your own journey through – what you term as “woo” – while I understand this might be so, I also understand that this can cloud your own judgments and render you pretty much the same thing as that which you detest.

I would believe you more if every personality calling itself “Skeptic” expressed them selves in the same way as you do, but they don’t – and for very good reason.

I don’t own your stuff, nor do I accept your evaluation of me as being factual, truthful or constructive.

Not the same thing. When you sail into unknown waters, what is unknown is just where your are. Waters are known. What you need to survive at sea is known. Winds and currents, while different, are known. You can prepare for the known.

I am sure that there were many unknowns to which those early adventurers prepared for as best they could.
IF there is a continuation of consciousness after death of human instrument, then it might be that OBEs – rather than being some delusion of the brain, are bridges from one state of reality to another.
IF so, then OBEs might be helpful for preparation into that unknown.

Yes, you are basing your future existence on what you know of the present. Yet you fully acknowledge that things such as "experience" and "knowledge" are dependent on your corporal existence. How can you use them to predict or plan for what a future incorporeal existence would be like? Why do you think they would have any relationship at all?

Not exactly.
I am basing another type of existence on what I know of this existence.
It is from this corporal existence that I experience and acknowledge.
I do not have any recalled information that I have consciously used to help me prepare for this corporal experience. All assistance received has been based upon those who have lived or are living a corporal life before my own.
Based on the small amount of subjective experience I have had with OBE, I can deduce that the two types of experience (corporal and non) are closely related.

Don't knock your aging body. It is the only vessel that you can count on housing your consciousness. But as for the dregs of what was once me, I agree with you. Let anyone who can find a use for it do what they will. It is unlikely that I will care.

Nope. I don’t knock the human instrument. Nor do I belittle the creator of this thing. I am unable to believe that something without intelligence could have created something as complex as a human instrument.
Anymore than I am able to believe that within the universe, there are no other systems which have produced similar complex life-forms.

It is not known as fact that two people’s dreams cannot be identical.
I don’t discount the usefulness of dreams, but the OBEs I have had are clearer than both dreams, and what is referred to as real life.

It is possible that there are no voices.
It is possible that there are voices.
It is possible that the voices are heard because the brain of the individual is ‘wired’ to receive these voices.
If so, these voices might come from the incorporeal. If so, this might be another form of ‘heads up’ on something of what is going on in that world.
It is possible that when a personality departs this world it may find itself existing independently of a corporal body.
It is also possible that the personality retains much of its prior self. So if it was a nasty prick in this world, it may be a nasty prick on the other.

I don't think you need a professional. You are more sane than most "spiritual" (if I may suggest the classification) people we get here. You probably function just fine in the real world, even if you long for another to exist. Really, belief in supernatural things is more common than denial of them. I don't think you need to worry about men in white coats.

I don’t long for another world to exist. I don’t belief in the existence of ‘supernatural’ – IF that parallel world exists, it may very well be a production of this world. This corporal world is natural (although – sheesh! Many believe that it was created by accident –such a belief is more the ‘supernatural’ to me than the belief that there was a conscious intelligence involved)

Sounds like an interesting story. You can tell it if you are very brave. Feeding time at the skeptic cage is not for the faint of heart.

So far I don’t even have a tiny scratch from the retaliation I have witnessed, to what I have shared.
In my own good time…

As a scientist, I don't believe anything is separate and disconnected. There are connections we barely recognize. But I don't think those connections can be reasonably described as "consciousness". It would require a re-definition of the word into something that would make no sense for most currently used applications. This is why I dislike using such terms for concepts to which they were not intended. I want to tell the New Agers, "Find your own damn words. Quit stealing ours."

Hmm…then someone might complain about words ‘being made up to suit concepts’ dammed if ya do…

Silly? That isn't the word I would use. I'd say "irrational". But humans are not always, or even often, rational.

This is interesting when you discover that some people believe that the brain is responsible for an incredible amount of people’s irrationalities and delusions.
IF this is so, then the brain is actually something that isn’t suitably able to define itself clearly using the device of its self.
And yet, it appears to be the only device around to attempt the job.
One might conclude therefore that any brains or any number of brains might make up words to express what they see as their own or others delusions.
Even that this might be the case, there is apparently no outside intelligence which could verify conclusively that brains are really delusional or just able to explore places using consciousness, which cannot be done any corporal way.

No one knows just how much any or every brain knows, or how intelligent it is beyond the measurable, or how much information it might be able to keep from the part of itself defined as ‘personal identity’, or for what reason it would keep this information, assuming it could.

It satisfies the mind, even if it has no evidence.

Satisfies the mind.
Interesting.
Why does the mind need satisfying?
Because it cannot conceive of nothingness? But it can. It started out that way, as far as we each are aware.
We have no sense of ever always having being in existence, therefore it is that understanding which can give us an idea of what it is like to not be.

LOL. It seems that "going places" would be fun. It is easy to contemplate that possibility. "Not going anywhere" is a possibility that is not nearly as fun to contemplate. As such, many people tend to ignore it, even though it has the most evidence.

Maybe it is not so much ignoring as it were, but already having a concept of having come from nowhere.

Just like the universe, as far as we can tell, came from nowhere.

These things we learn from observable, objective evidence. That is why we skeptics like evidence so much. It provides a basis for predictability.

Who the heck embraces nothingness? Solipsists?
And predictability will give the world stability?
I meant embrace now, the idea of your death being the end of everything that you are.

That is why I don’t think what you experienced is what I did. Any kind of fear seems to inhibit the process, at least from my own experiences, I have found this to .be so.

The process of OBE – there is a process.

My symptoms. OBEs were only one part of them. They never called me "delusional'. The medication was to prevent the panic attacks, not to prevent OBE's. Once the panic attacks diminished, so did the OBEs.

So your process for having what you call OBEs had something to do with panic attacks.
The medications prevented the panic attacks and also stopped the OBEs.

Subjective evidence is not evidence. That's called "anecdotes".

Yes – when shared with others who have no way to validate what you say, these are anecdotes.

No, there is not, but then, the trick isn't to prove it is a delusion, the trick is to prove it is real. If you can't do that, then there is no reason to believe it is real. What is that word we use to describe things that people think are real but cannot provide evidence for? Starts with a "D"

If I cannot prove to you that it happened, then it cannot be real to you, therefore there is no reason for you to believe it happened.
And there is no way for you to prove to me that it didn’t happen, although you can suggest other hypothetical explanations for me to consider.

I heartily encourage you to enjoy your trip and to send us pictures from the other side.

I think that we may have to wait for science to develop the instrumentation which will be able to achieve this thing, provided of course, that the other side truly does exist.

Percentage wise…what would be easier for you to believe could exist:

1: There is a continuation of individual conscious awareness after that individual consciousness leaves the dead human instrument.

2: There is an organization of scientists who are funded by the private sector to investigate areas of human consciousness which secular scientists are not funded to investigate.

There may be equal amount of non evidence to support either hypothesis, but number 2 is conceivably more possible.

So you believe.

But what have you done to disprove your belief?

All it would take is evidence... but you guys never have any... just semantics. Evidence... the kind of stuff we have to show that evolution is factual, and gravity, and atomic theory... evidence the kind of stuff we use to make planes fly and computers work... and to solve mathematical problems and physics equations. Just plain old measurable, replicable, evidence... the stuff that distinguishes real phenomena from human delusions, misperceptions, and the like. Evidence of the caliber you'd need to accept Tom Cruise's claims about Scientology or the claims of someone else opining an extraordinary experience that doesn't fit with our understanding of the universe-- say alien visitation with no witnesses or evidence or nothing on radar or anything left behind for verification purposes.

And I don't care what you think of me--I'm trying to explain to you what most skeptics think of the kinds of claims you make. We know that lots of people think they are having out of body experiences or transcendent mystical experiences-- we just don't conclude those experiences are evidence of what those people think they are evidence of. This is exactly what you would conclude if someone believes that thetans are real or that aliens are communicating with them telepathically. You can't disprove it. And you might agree that they truly believe this. But that would never be a reason to believe it yourself. It's much more likely that they are delusional or mis perceiving phenomena than that their experiences reflect some objective reality. And all their pedantic tsk tsking and semantics wouldn't make you change your mind. You'd know that you probably couldn't change their mind, but you wouldn't find that a reason to believe in their view of the world. In fact, the more they sounded like you, the more insane I bet you'd think they were, right? It wouldn't be a reason to start hoping aliens communicate with you or a sign that you should go at get "cleared" to be as "open" as Tom Cruise now would it? Why in the world would you expect to be treated differently by those skeptical of your claims than you would treat those who made claims such as those in the example?

You are showing the same disconnect from the craziness of your claims as Tom Cruise is showing from his. And you give nobody any reason to think you are less delusional or having less of a "messiah complex". And yet, you don't see yourself as delusional or having a messiah complex. But you do recognize that in Tom Cruise, don't you? You don't think that you are being equally incoherent do you? And yet, to me, you are. And I suspect you are to other skeptics as well.

I have no delusions that Navigator or Tom Cruise would understand what I'm talking about. I suspect they'd both be insulted to be lumped in the same category as each other. But to me-- it's all self important nothingness-- semantic, pedantic woo. Only a person with too much credulity would believe such people had the "gifts" they imagine themselves having. Skeptics are thankful not to be of that ilk.

All the woo feel special and important because they have "higher truths" and they all feel peeved and skeptics who find the notion of "higher truths" laughable.

But not everyone who calls themselves a skeptic is reacting towards what I have to say, in the same way you are.
Your own labeling of what you think I am or how I sound to you is just that. A Subjective reaction with more than a hint of derision, which if you were honest with your own self, is not how every skeptic, is reacting towards me.
Yet you write as if it were so.
As far as Tom is concerned, I fully realize that you have real issue with him, but I am not so inclined. I did watch the link you provided, but unfortunately it has been tampered with – he is obviously answering questions about his beliefs in association with this thing called Scientology, but I couldn’t really understand his answers because the questions were deleted.
If I thought you are acting with loving kindness, I would be deluded, yes?

You are like those you criticize, in a lot of ways. You cannot offer 100% proof which can convince even the hardiest of these ones you deride as being ‘woo’ – yet like those ones, it is enough for you to crusade for your cause to the point of being blind to the mirror image of that thing you detest, you have become…or have in one way or the other, have always been.

Until you can rid yourself of this, you will only continue to feed off the more predictable reactions to your attitude, which in that odd little way, are what help you to continue being sure about your own beliefs.

You have been consistent in the way you behave here, so for now I can’t be bothered reading anymore of what you post – it is merely for your own pleasure and feeling of gratification and silly besides, this need to finance your superior attitude about yourself at the expense of anyone you don’t agree with and think less of.
