I think you are wrong. American pilots were not in German concentration camps. They had separate POW camps and followed the rules of the Geneva Convention. The same for German prisoners held here in the US, German soldiers were in separate military POW camps. They were not held in American run concentration camps like the one in Crystal City Texas.

Question: why would those in charge of the camps take the time to put tattoos on the prisoners if they were to be killed?

And why were those in the picture not exterminated?

Actually, no... they didn't.

Atrocities by individual servicemen, or small groups under a "loose cannon" type leader are common to all sides in warfare. The Allies in WW2 are no exception to this.

But the Allies in WW2 were as a rule far better behaved than their axis counterparts. Unnecessary brutality was the exception rather than the rule, it was neither systemic nor was it openly encouraged and rewarded as it was among the Nazis.

Stories like that of the 2 million germans being deliberately starved to death under orders from Eisenhower made up by modern nazi sympathizers are precisely that... they are completely made up. They appear only on fringe websites side-by-side with Holocaust denial bilge.

They were the victors, so they were never tried.

Because the allies were moving too fast and the Nazis didn't have the time to kill everyone.

Because the Nazis' plan included using many of the prisoners as slave labor, working them to death. The ones who were selected for immediate execution didn't get tattoos.

From an Encarta article:

Arrivals at the complex were separated into three groups. One group went to the gas chambers within a few hours; these people were sent to the Birkenau camp, where as many as 8,000 people could be gassed and cremated each day. At Birkenau, the Nazis used a cyanide gas called Zyklon-B, which was manufactured by a pest-control company. A second group of prisoners were used as slave labor at industrial factories for such companies as I. G. Farben and Krupp. At the Auschwitz complex 405,000 prisoners were recorded as laborers between 1940 and 1945. Of these about 340,000 perished through executions, beatings, starvation, and sickness. . . . A third group, mostly twins and dwarfs, underwent medical experiments at the hands of doctors such as Josef Mengele, who was also known as the “Angel of Death.”

I presume Sword_of_Truth meant the Western Allies. And at least a part of the Soviet soldiers' bad behavior in Germany was in retaliation for German atrocities perpetrated in the Soviet Union. That doesn't make it right, but it makes it at least somewhat understandable.
