2012 end of the world?????

I saw an hour long program on the "Discovery" channel about this. It was quite hard to watch, at one point they seemed to imply that a planetary alignment with the center of the galaxy could cause a rapid magnetic pole shift.

It seems like about 50% or more of the shows on the Discovery Channel are about UFO's, monsters, or the apocalypse.

Welcome, Gate. And yeah, the History Channel is falling in line with woo programming, as well. One show (Monster Quest?) was devoted to proving/disproving a chupacabra that was actually just a dead dog (results not revealed until the show's end) some lady found and kept in her garage for several months.

I miss quality.

Interestingly enough, Terence McKenna modeled the I Ching to major events in human history. There is a dead end at 2012. Of course any skeptic will dismiss this, but it is interesting none the less.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novelty_theory
Novelty theory attempts to calculate the ebb and flow of novelty in the universe as an inherent quality of time. It is an idea conceived of and discussed at length by Terence McKenna from the early 1970s until his death in the year 2000. Novelty theory involves ontology, morphogenesis, and eschatology. Novelty, in this context, can be thought of as newness, density of complexification, and dynamic change as opposed to static habituation. According to McKenna, when "novelty" is graphed over time, a fractal waveform known as timewave zero or simply the timewave results. The graph shows at what times, but never at what locations, novelty is increasing or decreasing.

thanks for the warm welcome folks this place is lovely.
But unfortunately i cant get my friend to change her view she has gone as far as to say she wont get herself a boyfriend or a job cause whats the point we are all going to die any way. I find this so stupid but i cant force her to change her views so i have just started laughing at them.
cheers again x

Oh, great. Does this mean the welfare system is going to be burdened by End-Timers who won't work because the world is going to end in 4 years? That's almost enough to turn me Republican*.

*not really.

The world will be around long after human life has ended here I'm sure. So the correct way to say it would be the end of life on earth as we know it. Not the end of the world or the end of time. That's just silly!

I went away and had a look at some articles and videos about this subject and still find it totally laughable really what a load of nonsense lol.
And no xboxwarrior im lauras not "mayday" lol :p
so now that i have done research i am going to make my friend watch what i have watched and maybe it will bore her out of believeing it lol

STOP THE PRESSES! I just made an alarming discover. The calendar I have hanging on my wall ends on December 31 of THIS YEAR! I didn't believe it at first, I kept staring at the last page thinking surely there must be more pages somewhere. I put on my shoes and rushed to the nearest bookstore and bought another calendar, but it too ended on December 31!

I'm going to call the History Channel and see if I can get my own special.

I have my own faux new age web site, featuring a guru (friend of mine) who shares his wisdom about the upcoming calamity on December 21, 2012. "The universe will collapse like a punctured balloon."

If she's that far gone, try and get her to agree to this:

Allow your friend to put her money where her delusions are. Suggest that she sign a legal document transferring all her assets to you on January 1, 2013 when she obviously will no longer need them.

I did. This was my favourite bit:

What other signs can we expect to see before the Cosmic Deflation?

We will see common sense prevail in all areas of human endeavor. For example, air traffic controllers will abandon their radar in favor of pinpoint astrological forecasts. Medicine will realize that negative thoughts underly all disease, reiki will replace both antibiotics and chemotherapy, tarot will replace x-rays and ultrasound, and each hospital patient's chart will include a reading from the I Ching. What we now call architecture will be supplanted by Feng Shui. It has already begun to happen, hasn't it?

:newlol

That'll shut her up.

I'm glad that I read the entire thread before posting, as I was going to suggest much the same thing.

Lauras: When your friend refuses to do this, you might find it interesting to ask why she refuses. When she tells you that she won't sign away her assets because she can't be 100% certain, ask her how certain she really is, and why she'd say so. I've played this doomsday game with people before, and it's often interesting to see how they respond. I find, as Timothy apparently does, that they are usually more than willing to tell you how to deal with the end of the world, but less willing to follow their own advice.

Good on you for doing research Laura. As with most things that seem extraordinary, the real explanation is not quite as fantastic as people would like.
People have a tendancy to believe what they want to be true, and ignore the evidence, or not even bother trying to find the truth. That is where skepticism comes in. Skeptics simply resist the temptation to believe things just because they sound good. We look and see if there is really evidence, and if the claim being made has a good logical reason to be true or not.
Unfortunately, this can annoy the people who want to believe without evidence, so they tend to badmouth skeptics. Being a skeptic is the most sensible position to take. Well done on using your skills of reasoning to complete a skeptical inquiry. :)

Now you can see why it is so easy for young people to be influenced by doomsday religious cults.

We are all born with a fear of death and spend a lot of mental time trying to come to terms with it.

Unfortunately, there is very little you can do at the moment to change her views on this, but eventually she will put this on the back burner, and move on. Sounds like she might also be suffering from depression which could make her more likely to take irrational doom mongering more seriously.

On a positive note, in 2013, she will be wondering what that was all about with her boyfriend as she goes to work one morning.

Oh and by the way, we are all going to die, and that is an actual fact. However, is it a good idea to spoil the great gift that we are fortunate enough to have been given, by worrying about the prospect of death whenever and however, it may arrive?

One can't help noticing that the Mayan world seems to have come to an effective end around a thousand years ago.
Perhaps the fact their astronomers have failed to update their calendar for the next thousand years is in some way related to this?

Hi im new here and dont know if i am posting this in the right place so sorry if it is wrong.

Ok i have a friend that is always going on about 2012 and that the end of the world is going to happen then
She never explains it in full and i am a bit perplexed by it. Can any one explain this to me and tell me there views on this.
Do you believe this is true?????

Thanks

Well lauras, the Mayans were big on the planet Venus and in 2012 it is going to do an 8 hour transit across the face of the sun.
If this causes a sufficient ripple in the solar winds, who knows?
The San Andreas fault may finally let go. So might the Tokyo .

Just enough of a cataclysm to herald a new epoch.
