2012 end of the world?????

Wow - I just hit my first umm err Christian version of this. Seems on the 21 Dec 2012 when the Earth aligns with big black hole at the centre of the galaxy. Satan is going to unleash some evil trap and most of the Christians in the world are going to disapear.

So I asked the obvious question - where did the prediction come from - Given mayans where not Christians seems an amazing co-incident

I have made a diary note to turn in my Catholic badge on Dec 20 and hang with the athiests for the day - then pick up just in time for Christmas... If thats like okay with the athiests. Though you guys could be in as much trouble if the Mayan version is true, or Planet X turns up, or or or

Gee consumer confidence for Christmas is going to be low that year lol
 
I'm pretty sure that the Smoking Man said that the aliens were coming in 2012on the last episode of The X-Files.

I'm not sure if that was supposed to be a good or bad thing though:confused:

If you stick your nose in a bit of Mayan literature you will see they had a good knowledge of astronomy and time.

And the only major astronomical event in 2012 is the transit of Venus.
And the only thing that that will do, beside send a few fools blind, is interrupt the flow of the solar winds.

And since we have loaded tectonic plates and an unstable magnetic field...........who knows?

It sounds like a bit of "woo" on your part there Soapy, predicting the future.:D

Hey, let's play the "doomsday prediction game", buzz.

OK, here's what you need to do. You click on this page and read through all the predictions about the end of the world. Some include stuff about the position of Venus, there's stuff about the magnetic poles switching, numerology, astrology, the tectonic plates moving, the bible, pyramidology, etc....

Now, if you can find -one- common denominator about all these hundreds of doomsday predictions, spanning from the days of rome until our time (including doomsday prohecies that have yet to pass), what would this one particular common denominator be?
 
If the Spanish didn't steal the Mayan gold supplies, their banks would have remained open, necessitating the printing of new calenders for their valued customers.
 
This may have already been stated. But to me, it seems like a valid reason for the Mayans stopping the calendar in 2012 is because they figured by then, there would be a better, more accurate system replacing their calendar anyhow.

Since you seem to be such a cleaver little fellow Hawk one, why don't you save me the trouble of wading through the waffle on that web page and just tell me what amazing insight you have come to.

sorry but the end of the world was in 1 july 1999 as Nostradamus correctly predicted. We now live in the twilight zone:D

History Channel is a kind of Jekyll/Hyde network. Some of it programming is still very good, but some of it's programming is pure crap. The whole stream of UFO,Paranormal,Prophecy crap is guaranteeing that I use the remote a lot.
At one time History Channel was sort of my default channel,now I have changed to Turner Classic Movies.

I will answer for him.

None of the freaking end of the world prediction (all cited and referenced on that page you don#t want to read) from the last 2500+ years came to be true. So what make this so special that a culture which was hammered and destroyed 500 years ago, had a calendar which changed from cycle on a special recent date ? And as some other pointed out, it ain't even true that the calendar really ended at that date as mayan culture expert will say you.

Bottom line, if you really believe in that claptrap, buzz, could you please make a contract giving me everything you possess on 1st January 2013 ? Because, hey, anyway the world will have ended, so why do you care ?

The common denominator is that every single "end of the world" prediction so far - no matter what method, no matter the reasoning, no matter anything - has been utterly and completely wrong. And each and every year we pass through another set of predictions - remember the 07/07/07 fiasco just last year - that fails to materialise. A lesson that you should take well to heart, Buzz.

Actually, the vast majority had one other thing in common, buzz: The people who came up with those predictions really, really believed in them. Sure, some of them were made by people with a liking for money and a lack for scruples, but most of them - just like you apparently believe that the Mayans predicted the end of the world in 2012 (which they didn't, and even if they did, they'd be overwhelmingly likely to be wrong like everyone else) - truly believed they had discovered the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the thruth. Which indicates rather strongly that the whole "end of the world" is about belief and delusions, not facts and real predictions.

I really urge you to read through that page, Buzz. If the entirety of it seems too much, then focus on the doomsday prophecies of the modern day and age, including a plethora of prophecies for the near future. Hey, there's another mention of that Mayan calendar thing in there as well. Might be you can learn something there...

Hmmm, why am I not surprised by your answer?
Perhaps because it is exactly what I expected...........am I psychic or what!

As Apervius so correctly pointed out 2012 is not the end of the Mayan calendar but merely the end of a cycle.

The interpretations of this event run from doomsday catastrophes to the more subtle changes in consciousness. The reality of which we all will know in due time.

If we care to speculate on what will happen, it is best to take an example from the current great predictor of the future......the weatherman, and look at the things that we "know" and draw assumptions from that.

So if you want to understand Mayan interests it is best to look at the realms they explored, time, astronomy and consciousness. Somewhere in there will be the answer.

George Noory is having an all whacko star team of guests for Coast to Coast AM on the night of the 21st, which is ironic because his show starts after midnight for all of the planet Except for the Central time zone west... and at midnight CST. Even if he has that show on the 20th Los Angeles time, doomsday would already have effected most of the world and will hit the Eastern half of the U.S. and Canada before his show is half over.

I say we all tune in and just enjoy ourselves rolling our eyes and chuckling at the inanity we're bound to hear. :)
