Well, you wouldn't "explode", per se.

But going from 1 atmosphere of pressure to nothing in zero time will @#$% up your bodily tissues something awful.

The gasses and fluids in your body, no longer constrained by the weight of a hundred miles of air over your head, will start heading for the nearest exit along the path of least resistance.

Wichever of you internal tissues that is structurally weakest would quickly get shredded by blood racing for the nearest exit. Eventually coming out whatever orifices are already available (mouth, ears, anus, etc...).

EDIT: I missed Yllanes post along with the informative link he provided when writing this. I stand corrected on most of what I just wrote.

didnt know you guys were still throwing that one out there, yes, that one is the same hill, the negatives got mixed up and images of that location were mixed with 2 other locations

got an reply to the van allen belts?

But thermal phonons need a material to travel through.

You mean energy is transmitted through EM radiation. But that does not equate to a temperature every effectively as temperature is defined as the average linear kinetic energy of atoms.

In a spaceship, you also have to consider equilibrium temperature for the ship itself - if it insulates well against incoming radiation, things could become *very* frosty. A reasonable assumption is that the ship would be designed similar to the Apollo CSM, i.e. reflect the majority of incoming radiation and balance that with the heat generated by equipment and crew. Assuming the ship is turned off, well, you now have a very expensive freezer...

Under normal circumstances, temperature adjusts asymptotically towards equilibrium. The time it would take depends on if the ship holds an atmosphere (convection is vastly more efficient as a heat exchange mechanism than radiation, though less so in zero-G) and the heat capacity of the object. I have no idea how much heat a human body will hold. If it's still mainly water it would take a pretty long time, since water is very efficient at retaining heat. In vacuum, you'd have less water but also only radiation as a heat exchange mechanism. And an initial heat loss from when the initially released water boils off...

The "shattering body" thing sounds unlikely, though. One of my teachers did the old trick with the rubbergloved finger in liquid nitrogen, but that was a sausage. Try it with a larger piece, including a bone instead, and see what happens. I think you're unlikely to do much damage to it.
