I've Had Enough Of This Buffoon

Perhaps on slow news days we should instead seek to watch a situation comedy or two. Even a soap opera. Heck, a re-run of Hee-Haw would d.

CMT is showing Hee-Haw reruns every weekend. "You met another and [pfthbtp!] you were gone" still makes me laugh.

Hey, Grandpa, what's for supper?

Think about what you're bitching about for a sec.

I was in a situation where I had literally nothing to do but watch the news.

Today, CBS News's top story was about the housing market. It was a good story, and even though it focused upon some of the most expensive housing markets in the country (New York City and Palo Alto), it was relevant to a large number of citizens.

CBS News also discussed airline security and racial profiling, both domestically and abroad, which are matters that affect millions of people.

And then CBS News turned to other news that, while not earth-shattering, was highly newsworthy and relevant to many.

CNN, meanwhile, made its lead story of the day (aired just half an hour before CBS News began its report of the news of the day) an account of an unconfirmed and uncorroborated report that a certain perv may or may not have said something that pervs are wont to say.

For the love of Edward R. Murrow, do they still teach in journalism school what makes a "lead" story for a serious news organization?

(Is this where I'm supposed to put the emoticon?)

CNN is pathetic. What if there was peace in the Middle East, no hurricane Katrinas, or freaky white dudes claiming to have been there at the time of a child beauty queen's death? My lord! Whatever would they talk about? Glad I don't have to worry about that for a while.

They're just trying to reproduce the ratings the murder did at the time. Which is just foolish, in a post-9/11, post-Nick-and-Jessica, post-Katrina world. The standards for attention-grabbing are much, much higher. Murderer caught? Big deal. Uncaught murderers are more interesting, and murders without even a lead are more interesting still. Ten years ago there wasn't a war on, there weren't terrorist threats (that people knew or cared about, anyway), and there wasn't anything else going on.

Funny, I managed to avoid most of the coverage the first time around. This time it's impossible to get away from it. Every single shot of that guy gives me the creeps.

I've followed the story pretty closely. I don't pretend it's important, but I like a good mystery.

However,
RANT! Scientists have yet to develop an instrument sensitive enough to measure my interest in what the prevert ate and drank on his business class flight to Los Angeles. This was repeated so many times by so many different news organizations that I assumed there was some subtext to this that I was missing that would make this important to the case, or at the very least, remotely interesting.

A few months ago, I interviewed for a job at a place a block away from the Boulder County Courthouse. Right now, I'm kind of glad I screwed up that interview...

I'll tell you why we should care about this bozo. He's been popping in and out of people's lives for nearly a decade, uttering cryptic, vaguely sinister nonsense and then vanishing without a trace without ever explaining why you've just struggled through 20 hours of video gaming.

What they teach is no longer relevant. This all started to break down about 20 years ago(?) when network news divisions became profit centers instead of overhead or loss leaders.

breaking news on CNN...DNA doesn't match.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/08/28/ramsey.arrest/index.html

BOULDER, Colorado (CNN) -- The DNA sample taken from John Mark Karr does not match DNA found on JonBenet Ramsey's body when she was murdered in 1996, CNN affiliate KUSA is reporting.
KUSA, based in Denver, Colorado, quoted two sources in a bulletin on its Web site:
"9NEWS has confirmed from two sources that the DNA sample taken from John Mark Karr is not a match with the foreign DNA found on JonBenet Ramsey's body when she was murdered in 1996. 9NEWS has also learned the Boulder County District Attorney's office will not file charges against Karr in connection with the Ramsey case."

Well, all that water cooler talk for nothing.

CNN (per John Roberts) used the following language to describe the developments of the day (which you can read at http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0608/28/pzn.01.html):

"... huge surprises that seems to have the prosecution back at square one."

"Well, we're back to square one now, as far as the prosecution goes."

"... this astonishing case ...."

"... dramatic developments in the Ramsey case ...."

"... a day of bombshells ...."

The developments of the day were not disappointing or surprising in any fashion. The "top story" was, well, there was really no story in spite of all of the hype. It would have been a "bombshell" had there been a DNA match or other objective evidence to tie this slimy perv to the crime, but there was no such evidence, and therefore nothing to be surprised or astonished about.

Unbelievable that the DA would let it go this far. I must admit that I thought he was good for it. Though I have stated in the last week (after the first reports from his family started to come out) that this would be a good way to get a one-way ticket back to the states for someone who was facing prison in Thailand on sex charges (what do you have to do to get arrested in Thailand on a sex crime?). No proof, you just have to take my word for it, or not.

The story is newsworthy because it was a rich attractive blonde white girl. That's it. It sells to America because they eat this nonsense up.
If it would of been the same circumstances except the girl was from a poor family and was African American. I promise you we wouldn't be talking about it. They would of mentioned it a few times after it happened and that's all that would of been covered.

The news Media is covering the death of some random little girl like it's the presidents daughter yet they fail to cover real news worthy issues like the genocide and starvation of Africans, The incompetence of American politics, or other newsworthy issues.

Here's a good question. Do those of you living in other Countries see the same coverage of this?
