What's kind of funny is that the factually.co article cites this from Factcheck.org for the statement that only 8% of people with Somali ancestry in Minnesota are on public assistance. But if you look at that Factcheck.org page, it was updated because 81% is actually too low.

After CIS published its report, Brower, at our request, provided to us American Community Survey data showing that, between 2019 and 2023, 84% of the roughly 60,000 estimated individuals reporting Somali ancestry in Minnesota – including people born in and outside the U.S. – received either state or federal assistance income, SNAP, Medicaid, or a combination of those benefits.

You are quite right. I wonder how Minnesotas State Demographer can identify such a huge change in so short time. Something is wrong here.

She said the public assistance category specifically includes payments from state and federal programs like the Minnesota Family Investment Program, formerly known as Aid to Families with Dependent Children; General Assistance, for low-income individuals and married couples without children; and Supplemental Security Income, which is paid to elderly, blind or disabled persons with low incomes.

Benefits from other programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps, were not included.

Due to sampling error, Brower said, the actual percentage of Somali people receiving those forms of income assistance could range from 6.3% to 10.1%. The CIS report said 27% of Somali immigrant households in Minnesota “receive cash welfare,” based on the 2014 to 2023 period, “including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Supplement Security Income, and general assistance.”

so why does cis say 85% or whatever?

CIS said it counted the following “means-tested anti-poverty programs” as welfare: the Earned Income Tax Credit; Supplemental Security Income; Temporary Assistance to Needy Families; free or reduced-price school meals; the Women, Infants, and Children nutrition program; the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; Medicaid; and subsidized and public housing.

because they were including a much more broad set of programs.

But it’s worth noting, Brower said, that 95% of Somalis in Minnesota are citizens of the U.S. and 58% of them were born in the U.S.

The evidence provided is that, at some point, they got some type of assistance from one or more government schemes, for a period ranging from one-off to on-going. That is, they came in contact with government assistance. Which is pretty much what every US citizen does, sooner or later. That doesn't make Somalis a burden any more than it does other US citizens who get government assistance.

Also, you do realise that government assistance are not profit-making enterprises, yeah? Their job is to spend your taxes to achieve their goals...wisely, hopefully. Not to hoard your taxes in big money pits.

To the tune of...what? Tens of millions of dollars in the past decade?

And that's compared to the tens of billions the Trump administration has spent in less than a year on its war with Iran.

But sure, let's be mad about the tens of millions spent to help refugees and call that "a significant burden".

as an example, one of the items listed is reduced prices on school lunches. of course i am aware conservatives are also against feeding any children at all at school for free so even at even a reduced price i would expect they would not like that either, particularly if they’re of immigrant descent. they just don’t like immigrants

but they also have to concede that i don’t care if children of somali descent are given reduced prices for their school lunches, or even given free ones. to me its a good use of taxpayer dollars and i don’t care what their background is.

so its really just a difference in values

If they're including WIC as part of the stats then my entire family is a drain too because we all used it. My parents, my sister, my wife, myself, and my son all used WIC for our kids. It's an outstanding resource and HUGE for children, and I don't mean for just the kids of color that you despise so much. Even white ones that were born here (like my family) utilize WIC. In fact, something like 7 million people in the US use the WIC program and it can be the only nutrition kids get sometimes.

The 80% or 84% figure given for Somalian households getting some form of government assistance at least once over the course of many years doesn't seem so bad when you compare it to all Americans at large.

In 2010, 49 percent — or nearly half — of the U.S. population lived in a household receiving government assistance.

AND

meaning that 71% of adults are part of a household that has benefited from at least one of these programs

The EITC does not seem to be included in that 71% figure.


.. lies, damned lies, and statistics.
