In too many conversations I have had with USAians over the years, including long terms expats in Europe and whatever their politics, I've been confronted with the firmly held belief that social policies = socialism = communism.
That makes for mostly boring and sometimes infuriating conversations …

I realise that accusations of Socialism/Communism are merely MAGA whipping boys to rile up the bigoted feeble-minded, but FFS, I still can’t understand how anyone actually buys into this bull ◊◊◊◊.

(a rhetorical rant, my right-leaning Australian friends and neighbours also take up this bull ◊◊◊◊, e.g., I am referred to as a “Champagne Socialist” here, because I support “leftie” thinking but have the temerity to own the house I live in)
