On October 3, 1993, Operation Gothic Serpent had a bad day in Mogadishu.
After the second Blackhawk are shot down, snipers Gary Gordon, and Randy Shugart volunteered to be put on the ground to defend the crew with no guarantee of reinforcements.

The Pentagon and US Government moved on from this incident. The problem is Gothic Serpent marked a turn from the successful doctrine of limited and measured intervention that had made Panama and Desert Storm successful. There were few white-papers written about the 10/3 raid in military publications, and it wasn't until the book,
Black Hawk Down , by Mark Bowden was publsihed, and later made into a movie directed by Ridley Scott that this battle received the attention it deserved. The problem was that Al Qaeda studied the 10/3 raid, and Saddam Hussein made
Black Hawk Down required reading for his officers. Delta made massive changes in how missions were conducted, and how first aid was applied. USASOC spun up it's own intelligence unit (
The Activity or Orange) because it no longer trusted the CIA to pass along information in a timely manner.
The "Big Army" responded by commissioning the
Striker APC, expanding MOUT training, and updating first aid procedures. But there was little change in doctrine. This opened the door to our performance in Afghanistan, and Iraq.
Gothic Serpent was a result in "Mission Creep" of
Operation: Restore Hope. The US, with the UN, had been in Somalia far too long by that October in 1993, the White House had changed hands, and the Clinton Administration was looking for an easy answer to a complex problem.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
