"Lake America"

In the end, Trump renaming will fail because most people will still use the old terms.
And in two years the new president will reverse it. South Park's response is amusing, they've announced the next season it will be called South America.

As much as people have ragged on Google and Apple for capitulating, trump puts them in a no-win position.

Don't rename the lake and you may face serious repercussions from this unhinged lunatic. Rename it and annoy a small portion of your customer base who are now downloading the mapquest app and deleting yours.

I'm sure they all would've preferred if they never had to make this decision. Except for mapquest that is. They're having a moment.

Just wanted to pop in and note that Google and Wikipedia are still using "Lake Ontario".

The insane part is that Amerigo Vespucci (the guy "America" is named for) never set foot in any territory that later became part of the USA. He "discovered" the coasts of Venezuela and Brazil, mostly. So, although a disputed account has him actually reaching the Gulf of Mexico, he never went anywhere near Lake Ontario.

And then with both of these explorers (Columbus and Amerigo), you have a weird stolen valor effect with the "we discovered it" idea. Most of those claiming the heritage as being "their people" are not from Spain, Portugal, or what later became Italy (Columbus was from Genoa financed by Spain, and Amerigo was from Florence, financed by Portugal).

So... why the word they're using even sparks nationalism isn't particularly clear.

But it's best not to even try to understand uber-nationalist Trump fanboys. They're far easier to manipulate than they are to understand.

And yeah, even Trump's ancestry in particular has no association with the countries that funded it, or the Pre-Italian explorers who made the trip. His ancestry looks a lot like mine (Saxon in my case... Germany didn't exist yet, but the Trump's were from the palantate, further south, Germany did exist (barely) by the time they moved accross the pond). His actual German and Scottish ancestors didn't "discover" "America" until the 19th century. So... not sure why he's trying to associate himself with explorers from areas that later became Italy that were working for countries he has also never had any association with.

So... perhaps we should deport the "Merica!" nationalists back to Venezuela (or Spain, Portugal, Florence... wherever is fine), since that's where they apparently think they came from? I guess that's one takeaway. The name of the actual country is The United States. America refers to the whole continent, but it's a bit less nominally appropriate for the land this country actually occupies than it is for other places.

If we wanted to rename Lake Ontario for the people who "discovered" it with the usual Eurocentric bias, that would be Samuel de Champlain and Etienne Brule in 1615. So... French people.

But of course they would name it after the French King, Lac Louis (I guess because all French kings are a Louis).

ETA having looked it up or Lac Anne after the new Queen of France.

South Koreans would prefer that we call the Sea of Japan the East Sea. It's not because they particularly love the cardinal direction. It's because they (generally speaking) hate Japan.

With Trump, it's an expression of his ire--"owning the libs" as foreign policy. The important thing is that they hurt him (Canada by not catering to his every whim, and Mexico by existing), and so now he's going to try to hurt them, by taking away their precious names. That it makes a fool of him won't get past his well-developed narcissistic defenses.

"America"...that's just down to a lack of creativity. I suppose it could be worse. He could have called it Lake Trump, whereupon it would have immediately filed for bankruptcy.

Nah it would have started to drain.

Minor nitpick: He doesn't hate Mexico because it exists. He hates it because its filled with dirty Mexicans.

When my submarine went to Chinhae back in 1986, we were told to call the seas the East Sea and the West Sea, instead of the Yellow Sea and Sea of Japan. It was never an issue out in town. :)

Or just call it Lake Lac - Lake for the part that's in the US, and Lac for Canada. All in the great tradition of bilingual countries, where it's quite common to have that kind of redundancy.

This reminds of our pretend wars with S. Country against N. Country Orange in the Orange Sea.

Disputes over names are not new or unique, from what I gather the Irish don't like the British Isles. Still, Lake America is still embarrassing, it's the sort of thing and insecure idiot does, what's next? One of those military parades like the Soviets used to do?

It is like the term for the big island in the British Isles is Great Britain, this was only a reference to little Britain; Brittany in France. The British were the pre-Roman inhabitants of the islands who were a pretty homogenous population across the British Isles (and of course Gaul) with druids and a common language.
