Using "the critique" just invites criticism. There are a number of concerns that critics have raised, with varying levels of reasonability and applicability. Concerns about the overall safety of living in cities is certainly one of the critiques, yes, but not even close to the only one. Even so, on a quick check, about 27% of the population DO live in cities, with 43% in suburban and 30% in rural areas. The concern about crime would be more convincing if people were being forced to live in said walkable cities, which really isn't something that I've seen any effort to push for, myself.
Other examples of criticisms include concerns about gentrification, given the normal trend for those with more wealth to act to monopolize good things and push out those less wealthy from being able to live near them, concerns about the flaws of public transportation and how those flaws affect travel, and concerns about restricted access and lack of some freedom for those who rely on their vehicles for work or pleasure.
