Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been arrested...

Orf wit 'is 'ead!
So doing Henry VIII imitations"
Its called a Constitutional Monarchy, and while some might call it weird, it is far from unique. Japan, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Andorra, Luxembourg, Monaco, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Jordan, Morocco and Bhutan all have Constitutional Monarchies that operate on a similar basis.
It's to give a country a figure to rally around who is above party politics.

It's way more than that.

The history of the British Monarchy goes a long way to explain why it is the way it is. I highly recommend Unruly by David Mitchell. I've made it as far as Richard III so far and it is varying degrees of crazy.

Seconded. Marvellous book.

And they're all weird.

Seems odd that they can strip him of his titles but that didn't also remove him from the line of succession. Guess I'm getting Stockholm Syndrome from reading the Trump thread with all his dictatorial "decrees" made in one fell swoop.
Because those titles etc are made up stuff the royal family play with, they are meaningless in any legal sense, total and utter pomp, which is why "Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal" when she became a convicted criminal was dealt with as Anne Elizabeth Alice Laurence, no HRH, no Princess Anne. The only title that has any real legal meaning is "sovereign" and even then how they are named, addressed and so on are nothing but convention, and the sovereign is of course beholden to parliament, they serve at parliament's pleasure not the other way around.

I do agree with those that consider altering the succession act is a waste of parliamentary resource, if they have such resources to spare let them simply end the monarchy, then the royal family can continue to do what they want with their made up stupidity and they can fight with the likes of the Kardashians for exposure.

Me, I think it's OK to feel superior to a pedophile, but maybe that's just me.
As much as I'd like to see them removed from any "official" interactions with my society there hasn't been any evidence at all that Andrew is a paedophile.

And as ever we are a fickle social animal, I remember when he was labelled as Randy Andy by the media, when that was a positive label, when his exploits with "the ladies" was what the public apparently wanted to know about and approved of. The same acts he committed back then, the same behaviour are now the very acts he is today being condemed for. (Remember the age of consent for hetrosexual sex in all of the UK has been 16 since the 19th century, so him having sex with someone 16 and over was in itself certainly not what we consider to be paedophilia nor illegal. Of course the "sex trafficking" aspects could still make him guilty of rape and other sexual assault charges regardless of the age of the female..)

If you want a good read about the current lot highly recommend "And What Do You Do?" by Norman Baker.

He wasn't actually stripped of his titles, he just agreed not to use them. He was removed from the Order of the Garter and the Royal Victorian Order.

Seconded. "Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York" by Andrew Lownie is worth a look too although I would suggest avoiding the audiobook, it's read by the author and his voice is, in my personal opinion, the kind of posh monotone that leads to me zoning out and missing stuff.

Strangest thing isn't it? You go through your life of insane unearned privilege acting like a self entitled arsehole to all the 'common' people around you and when your friendship with a convicted sex offender comes out everyone suddenly everyone turns against you.
