It's an argument I don't think can ever be won, which is fine. Argument itself has value, especially when it leads us to reflect on our own values. What part of our existence is individual and what social? What part is timely and what part historical? What's the final context, if there is one? Does it matter who else ends up telling your story?

I'm reminded of an incident long long ago in college days, when a friend was reciting Alan Ginsburg in reverent tones,with the famous starting line of "Howl:" I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked,dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, My interjected response, of which I was reminded many times later, was "I guess it goes to show they weren't the best minds after all."

Of course it is, otherwise we'd be stuck calling Elon Musk the genius he isn't, but there is some room for argument depending on how he got that lot of money and how he played it when he did, and what you mean by intelligence. Long term, short term, personal or social, general or specialized, you can spin it different ways, not to mention whether his erstwhile success depends more on his skill than on the cupidity and stupidity of those who used him.
