Implement a Universal Basic Income and yes, you would absolutely get the money, whether you need it or not. Everybody would.I'm in poverty. Hand it over.
It's the classic biblical line, oft used by "conservatives", rightists and god botherers as an excuse for doing nothing.A sweeping statement, and even if it were true, that does not necessarily mean that it has continue to be so. There are an awful lot of things that have in the past been true of (most) societies, which we have changed, because our views have changed. Most of us would not defend slavery, or rape, for instance.
My answer was given with the same level of seiousness and interest in trutfulness of the person who posed it.Oh, I've seen it plenty of times from all sorts of political persuasions, including the left wing.
I'm semi retired now but when I was salaried I was lucky enough to be paying about a 55% tax rate (income and NI) on my earnings over I think it was about £40,000. Would be happy to see my taxes increase above that if it was needed (but really isn't) to get everyone out of poverty.I'm in poverty. Hand it over.
For some reason, everybody thinks nobody wants to. The algorithms help exacerbate that delusion. And as Darat said, poverty is actually very, very easy to fix. For some reason nobody wants to.
If somebody wants to, why haven't they? For some reason, everybody thinks nobody wants to. The algorithms help exacerbate that delusion.
It's literally the definition of "conservative". Conserve the status quo. Don't change anything. Tradition over innovation. It's the classic biblical line, oft used by "conservatives", rightists and god botherers as an excuse for doing nothing.
If somebody wants to, why haven't they?
Why would it apply across national borders? Other forms of welfare don't.There was another discussion on UBI earlier I recall. I don't think it resolved how it could apply across international borders.

Who pays for it?My opinion (and I'm not an expert on it - there are far smarter people than me who have examined this policy) is that all citizens get a UBI. If you want to come here to get it, you have to go through the hoops and become a citizen.
The government, obviously.Who pays for it?
LOL! I'm literally laughing! Yeah, no, that won't solve poverty. It's likely to make it worse. You give those in poverty money.
I see no reason to believe that anything has changed in the world that would eliminate poverty.A sweeping statement, and even if it were true, that does not necessarily mean that it has continue to be so. There are an awful lot of things that have in the past been true of (most) societies, which we have changed, because our views have changed. Most of us would not defend slavery, or rape, for instance.
What makes you think that poverty is easy to fix? I think it is far more likely that you grossly misunderstand the problem! And as Darat said, poverty is actually very, very easy to fix. For some reason nobody wants to.
Well, some people have always been ready to share what they have with others, that is true, and some still struggle with the thought, but we are far more informed about the world these days, so I would have hoped that the letter category might have shrunk.I see no reason to believe that anything has changed in the world that would eliminate poverty.
