General UK politics VIII - The Last Tory

I'm suspicious, the closest thing to a comment from Buck House is a generic statement on cards, the way I read it is that this documentation is requested when the card is to be sent overseas. The cards aren't sent automatically, they have to be applied for and it doesn't explicitly say they put in a request and were rejected just that he "didn't get one". Call me a cynic, but is it just possible that that they've never applied and gone running to the press rather than checking the procedure?
British nationals get one automatically without making an application as long as they get a state pension or other benefit i.e. as long as the government knows how old they are and has a current address.

I suspect that, in this case, it wasn't obvious he is a British national.

Thank you for the correction, I'm sure you used to but I was obviously out of date, or wrong. Presumably that means he doesn't get a State Pension?

A friend of mine used to be a DHSS investigator, one of her jobs was doing welfare checks on people approaching their 100th birthday, to make sure they weren't sending a card out to someone who was already dead.

I wonder how quickly they shut down & updated the system and how many people got a birthday or anniversary card from someone who was already dead?

But so far as this old chap was concerned, surely it would have been kinder just to fake a card to make him happy rather than parade him in front of the media.

Well yes that and "perhaps we should stop sending them a pension cheque".

The Japanese had problems with their dead centenarians....

It's always the ones you most expect.

Reform MP, Sarah Pochin, was clumsy in her wording, but I know what she means.
82% of Brits are white, 9% are Asian, and 4% are black.
But well over half of advertisements and some tv shows do not reflect this and suggest Britain is predominantly non white.
Does it matter?

Minstrel acts were very popular up to the 40s, they were the way that black music could be performed for a white audience and in the USA comply with segregation laws. They still hung on in to the 70s, BBC still had a peculiarly British interpretation with the Black and White Minstrel show on prime time up till 1978 it looks completely bizarre now.

I was born in 71 & I remember it being on the telly (during the daytime iirc, so probably reruns.
