Two cops shot dead in rural Australia

In case anyone is still labouring under the belief that this clown is not a sovcidiot...

... he changed his name to Freeman.

Although he now uses the names Dezi Freeman and Dezi Bird Freeman, Mr Freeman was previously known as Desmond Filby.

Well it’s now the third day of the manhunt, and it’s been snowing in the high country. It’s quite possible that Freeman has a stockpile of food and warm clothing somewhere nearby, but the police are not going anywhere.

I know the area a little. It is mostly rainforest wilderness and very difficult to hike through. But there are a lot of FWD tracks, many closed during the winter months. Ultimately he will have to get onto a main road to escape, but there are few of those, and they will certainly be roadblocked.

Aussies, please update this thread of they catch the guy. It may not make international news.

Further to lionking's post above, the town/district has been and is still locked down while the manhunt is on.

He is definitely a sovcit (he has prior court history with sovcit arguments used- initiated BY him lol) as were the Qld ones (who were actually relatively close to me, and well known on the local FB page before being banned by the admin...)

Its a growing (and worrying) trend worldwide, it hasn't been 'just a US thing' for well over a decade or more now...

I wonder if ABC Australia's Four Corners episode on Sov Cits last week had any impetus on this. I imagine a nut like that might do something like this thinking things were coming to a head.

I hope not. 4Corners sent out their least confrontational reporter and the sov cits were treated with respect. But they also interviewed magistrates and others who have been victims of sov cit harassment and threats, so it could have tipped over an already unhinged idiot.

Not sure he's a sovcit. More like a prepper with a criminal history. But having shot some cops, he's in real trouble now. They won't go soft on him when they catch him.
Didn't he spout SovCit nonsense in a magistrates court?

Apparently he did. Then again, I can spout pseudo Japanese in a magistrate's court. That doesn't make me a samurai.

But I don't think any of that matters at this point. He shot two cops dead and seriously injured another, a very rare and extraordinary crime in Australia. The police force takes that sort of thing very seriously. Like, deadly serious. So he's in a world of trouble right about now.

A side issue: Is there much of a black market in guns & ammo in Australia?

It certainly exists.

There was a major theft of pistols from a rural firearms dealer in rural South Australia.

I believe that 600 hand guns were stolen.

Since then, whenever crims are caught with hand guns, it is very common that they're traceable back to that theft.

Australian Institute of Criminology has an interesting paper about firearms theft.

Clearly those stolen weapons go somewhere...

This video was published in the Grauniad today. This is Freeman being confronted by a neighbour for trespassing. IMHO, and IANAD nor do I play one on TV, this looks far more like untreated mental issues, perhaps paranoid schizophrenia.

Here's the Supreme Court of Victoria judgment: https://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/vic/VSC/2024/682.html
There isn't anything blatantly sovcit or FOTL there as far as I can see.
There are a number of his arguments discussed and dismissed in this judgement that do indicate that Freeman was using SovCit arguments to defend himself. An example,

I am satisfied that Mr Freeman’s argument that s 55D of the Road Safety Act 1986 is invalid has no real prospects of success. Mr Freeman points to nothing in the federal constitution that either empowers the federal legislature to enact laws that govern drivers in Victoria, or, if there were, to laws that are in conflict with the provisions of the Road Safety Act 1986 here under consideration so as to engage s 109 of the Commonwealth Constitution. The regulation of driving in Victoria is a matter for the Parliament of the State of Victoria and not the Commonwealth and, as his Honour concluded, the Victorian Parliament had power to enact that legislation.
There are other discussions indicating SovCit defence arguments as well.
It would be easier to demonstrate with a transcript or decision letter of the initial hearing, rather than the review of the judgement, as we could then review Freeman’s actual defence.

How on earth could Freeman afford a Supreme Court challenge? Yes, you can represent yourself, but there are lodgement fees and costs which would be in 5 figures as a minimum.

Of course, he would not have paid them, but the number of people chasing him for money would have been large, adding to his level of unhingedness.

Breaking news is that the wife and a child of Freeman were arrested and later released.

It would not surprise me if this was a tactic to lure him out of hiding. The police did not suppress news of the arrests, as they are able to do. And for those wondering, internet coverage is patchy, but is still there. There are ski fields and population centres nearby.
