Reminds me of an interview I read with an expat Venezuelan who'd worked in the state oil industry. In 2007 Chavez began to seize the remaining privately owned and operated oil fields. This gentleman said Chavez was warned -- by himself and other Venezuelans in the industry -- that the state lacked the stockpiled parts and the trained personnel to keep these operations going. They were ignored. Since then Venezuelan oil production has declined by 75%.

That's right out of the trump playbook.

I appreciate your concern; I'm very much on guard against online scams. This one appears to check out though, as it's intertwined in a couple different places in UPS's shipping communications to me. I'm not ready to pay it until I first have the shipment in hand. From there, I'll open a chat with UPS to determine the authenticity/legitimacy of the tariff charge.

I have to wonder how much of that is due to companies ordering stuff from foreign countries months ago to stock up on their inventory before the tariffs came into effect (driving up the trade imbalance), then stopping the extra purchases (allowing the trade deficit to return to "normal".)
