Trump's Second Term

In most countries, blood donation is a voluntary and altruistic activity. In the US, donations are paid for. You might think this is only fair, however the consequence is that the people who donate tend to be those desperate for money, often with drug habits or health conditions, and the general population tend not to take part, the reverse of the situation in, for example, the UK.

I don't know where one could get paid for a blood donation. The Red Cross does not pay for donations.

You can get paid for blood-plasma donations, but that's where they return the platelets to your body.

My friend works at the medical school in Omaha. He is not a doctor, he is in occupational health. So farmers do not kill themselves with equipment and chemicals.

DOGE fired the agency that is the only way the univeristy can communicate with farmers. There is no state level agency for this. NIOSH.

NIOSH also does mine safety and everything else.

I thought RFK hated chemicals poisoning humans.

This is the department that is losing funding and its connections through NIOSH. They still have a role in public health such as pandemics and children's health by whatever funding the state has. In fact the 2017-2020 Trump era had largely state level public health. Think California scale. My friend is tenured but the funding in his particular specialty is quite dependent on federal agencies.

Isn't exporting and importing beef of all things over the Atlantic a bit of a strange idea anyway? Maybe I'm missing something.
Economics drives a lot of behavior that looks insane on first glance.

I realized this first in history class when an illustrated map showed how it was actually cheaper back in the old days for people to grow cotton in India, ship it to England to be spun, then ship the fabric back to India than to do it all there. That looks really crazy on a map.

And of course a big factor here is that Argentina and Australia have a huge amount of space to raise cattle which is far more limited in Western Europe.

Even today, when different factors are important, the 'obvious' answer is not always correct. It can, depending on the time of year, have a lower carbon footprint to grow apples in New Zealand and ship them to the UK than grow them in UK and store them.

OMFG, someone's figured out where Trump got his claimed (but entirely fictional) Tariff rates other countries supposedly apply to the US, it's the ratio of trade deficit to imports!

Vance is lying

A judge specifically granted the man legal protection from being deported to El Salvador.
The government didn’t just send him there anyway - an error they admitted in court - they locked him up and say there's no way to bring him back, tough luck.

JD Vance claims that the Maryland father the Trump administration mistakenly deported to a slave prison in El Salvador wasn't "father of the year" because he had "traffic violations," and says "we do not ask permission from far left Democrats before we deport illegal immigrants."

The Dow Jones opened down about 1200 points and presently is down -1,262.93 (-2.99%) today. S&P 500 down -188.89 (‎-3.33%). NASDAQ down -804.93 (‎-4.57%). WHEEEEEE!!!!

FT dropped −129.28 (1.50%) immediately on opening but has stabilised now.

He probably was also a serial jaywalker! Praise be to Jeebus that this evil beast has left our shores and will never darken our doors again!
