Trump's Second Term

The NYT reported, "Pam Bondi, the attorney general, echoed Mr. Blanche, calling Mr. Trump “the greatest president in the history of our country” and saying she works “at the directive of Donald Trump.”" I thought that the Justice Department was supposed to have some independence from the office of the president.

Hegseth: People from Africa and Asia are not migrating and there is no climate change. No need to keep track of it.

Hegseth’s office also had social sciences and DEI research axed in a memo announced in early March. The cost cutting measure will save $30m a year in Pentagon funding of internal studies, “on global migration patterns, climate change impacts, and social trends”.

In a post on X, Hegseth said: “[DoD] does not do climate change crap. We do training and warfighting.” Those comments match up with his complaint that under the Biden administration the military somehow weakened soldier standards and focused its efforts away from fighting wars in favor of adopting liberal subcultures.

“The truth is the United States military is the most lethal fighting force in the history of the world, and the Department of Defense never took its eye off warfighting and meritocracy,” said Zier. “I saw that up close over the course of 15 years working at the Department of Defense, across administrations.”

.....
why new and evolving watchdog policies governing how covert actions are carried out were adopted across the Obama, Trump and Biden administrations of the past. By 2023, Austin instituted new orders surrounding civilian harm mitigation.

But Hegseth has closed the Pentagon’s Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response office and the Civilian Protection Center of Excellence, which both handled training and procedures critical in limiting civilian harm in theatres of war. Coupled with plans to overhaul the judge advocate general’s corps to remake the rules of war governing the US military, all signs point to a Pentagon more prone to tragic mistakes.

Someone posted on social media that Bondi has had 42 appearances on Fox News since becoming AG. It's pretty clear what her job is.

Oh, and trump went to the DoJ yesterday for an hour-long victory lap, airing his usual grievances and thanking his cronies for bringing the department to heel.

Charlie is constrained by law and parliament.
Indeed, for which I'm eternally thankful. My point is that he's known not to be receptive to correction, even from experts on a subject. (There's an anecdote that Dawkins tells, which I've quoted more than once on this forum, but there are undoubtedly other examples.)

Is "tragic mistakes" going to be the new euphemism for "war crimes" ?

The US is expelling South Africa's ambassador to Washington, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying he is "no longer welcome in our great country".

In a post on X, Rubio accused Ebrahim Rasool of hating America and President Donald Trump and described him as a "race-baiting politician".

He will have just about all the other ambassadors leaving shortly. Recalled by their countries.

Sorry, but I just think Schumer was right that a shutdown just would have played into the hands of Trump and MUsk.
You have to pick your fiths.
And since you have written off the US, just remember that internatinal politics is like nature, and it hates a vacumme. Ihoope you like your new CCP overlords.
And what? You think the Canadians and Europeans are wrong to write off the USA? It's also quite arrogant to assume that just because the USA has abandoned its self-proclaimed post as 'leader of the free world' that means there's some sort of vacuum that China is going to be able to fill. Don't expect everyone else to bow to the fascists in Washington because of the Chinese bogeyman, that record is getting worn out.

Frankly, at this stage, the CCP overlords are a more sensible, reliable, dependable sane option than Trump's USA. And we know full well they are genuine communist bribable dictators. Least worst choice. Trump on the other hand, is outright insane and out of control.

Im curious as to what exactly this guy said to deserve such treatment.

From The Guardian's coverage
“The supremacist assault on incumbency, we see it in the domestic politics of the USA, the Maga movement, the Make America Great Again movement, as a response not simply to a supremacist instinct, but to very clear data that shows great demographic shifts in the USA in which the voting electorate in the USA is projected to become 48% white,” the South African ambassador said.

And he sure doesn't understand just how many auto/truck parts are made all over the world. From tires to light bulbs, and there's a whole lot of stuff in between. He's thrown a big ol' big rock in the pond, and there's no stopping the ripples it created. The question now is, do you just get your feet wet, or do you drown?
According to the sticker on the truck I'm probably buying, USA/Canada content 35%, Japan 20%, Mexico 30%. And that still leaves 20% for somewhere elses. Engine parts: USA. Transmission parts: USA. I have no idea why the sticker is worded as it is but I'm sure it's some wasteful federal regulation that President Musk needs to get rid of.

Note what vice president jd vance said: "[A]s the president has said a recognition that we have to accept, which is that Joe Biden left this economy in a disaster." vance doesn't say it's true, only that we "have to accept" it. Does it matter to the Magamutts whether it's true or not? No, it probably doesn't. What matters is, trump said it.
