Perhaps we should also be reminded that none of them were women, none of them blacks, none of them Asians, and so on … The world has changed a lot since the days when freedom was only for Christians.

And quite a lot of the singnatioies were not actually christian. There were four declared deists and twelve who never publicly acknowledged a religion.

Plus, by the 18th century religion had become a nominal thing among the upper classes, of whom most of the signatories were.
