Matt Gaetz reported to be leaving the House

Some people here are giving Trump way too much credit for being clever.
I think hh honestly though he could force Gaetz's nomination through.

If I were to bet, I'd bet on Gaetz's forgoing the Senate seat and running for governor in two years. If he becomes a senator, then the Senate Ethics Committee will just pick up where the House Ethics Committee left off. But if he's out of Congress altogether, he won't have to worry about that, plus he can concentrate on fundraising and putting together a statewide campaign organization for the next two years.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), who characterized Gaetz's nomination as "God-tier level trolling," has had far and away the best hot take so far on the withdrawal. From Real Clear Politics:

SEN. JOHN FETTERMAN: Holy ****! I didn't see that coming!

I mean, yes he was the ultimate troll, and people have the opportunity to freak out over a thing and respond if you want to do that. But you'd better pace yourself, because it is not even Thanksgiving. And we don't have to react and take unserious things so seriously, that the world is going to spin off its axis, the way it is right now.

But I just heard something, I heard that Trump is going to issue a new silver dollar to commemorate that, so I think that's going to be the next cycle.

🤣

Recess is Gratz’s favourite time of the day.
It's the only time he can see his girlfriend.

Lots of great comments here on why Senator Gaetz is unlikely to happen. In our haste to divine the master plan, I think we have to keep in mind that Donald Trump is most often a chaos agent. There may not be, or ever was, a master plan that involves Matt Gaetz.

This made me laugh my ass off just because he's walking out of the door while it's saying he's withdrawing. I laughed way more than I should at work.

I completely agree. I mean, ultimately, Matt Gaetz triggers the libs, and that's it. It's been fun, but when all is said and done, nobody really likes him and he has no leverage over anyone, so his fifteen minutes of fame could be up. He'll probably pop up, Sarah Palin-like, on talk shows and maybe try to stay relevant with edgy tweets, but let's face it, that's a crowded market place.

I'd like to say it was nice knowing him, but that would be ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊.

Oh he might just give up elected office, and go after the big bucks in Right wing media.

So he removes himself from consideration. What does that say about his future? Just fighting allegations full time?
Gaetz is a big time nepo-baby (in all senses of that word). Even if T****y doesn't oblige, daddy has enough leverage over Brave Sir RonDa to make Matty baby a senator.

I am genuinely surprised that Gaetz had the self-awareness to withdraw from the nomination process and/or that Republican senators signalled that they were willing to impede this appointment.

Gaetz is indeed a massive A-hole and and a Class-One creep. But he is also not entirely stupid. And he can read.

All of the above is true but I thought that he'd take the Trump path of simply denying everything regardless of the level of evidence against him.

Like most of MAGA, Gaetz is also a coward. As is Trump, but that's another discussion. Such dicks are only trying it on as far as they think they can get away with stuff - pushing the envelope. Because Gaetz knows that if he pushed on too far, that report would indeed leak, and his life could quite suddenly compress to a 10-foot cell for a few dozen years. And Donny would not be his friend any more nor bail him out. Because he was a loser.

I just read an article on the Daily Beast that said he could still take the seat in the house come January. The logic goes something like this, he resigned from his current house session seat, but, since he was just reelected to that seat in the upcoming house session, which hasn't started yet, he could still take it, because it's not the one he resigned from. I don't know if that line of thought is in fact possible or not, but that was what they were proposing. That same article included a comment from Gaetz's wife that implied he was done with politics altogether.
We can only hope that's the case.

According to an article in Politico, Trump's selection of Gaetz was pretty much a spur-of-the-moment decision. Easily believable, given Trump's past.

IMHO, it is unfortunate that this happened so fast. It was only in the news for a week, so many people will have forgotten about it by January.
Does this make him Trump's quickest ever firing of one of his "only the best people"?
