Matt Gaetz reported to be leaving the House

The first few TwiX posts I saw (of the 518K currently - is that a record???) were defending the ◊◊◊◊ bag. I didn't need to read any more.
 
How could an experienced politician like Gaetz not know how things would turn out? Was he really thinking that he could sneak in via a recess appointment?

Really hard to say. On one hand, he's an obnoxious, unloved dweeb mired in just about the worst possible scandal. On the other hand, it would piss off the libs.

As someone once said, a Republican would eat a turd if there was a chance that a Democrat would have to smell their breath.

The answer's always no until you try! Seriously though, I think they expect the public to just ignore the ◊◊◊◊◊◊ stuff and confirm them anyway.
 
If we go with the theory that Gaetz really did fear the ethics investigation report, then mooting it by resigning preserves his electability to a greater extent that if he had been ousted like George Santos. Under that presumption, it's not hard to believe that Gaetz massaged Donald Trump's ego, promising him to pursue all his fantasy prosecutions, to dismantle the FBI, and so forth. That's enough to earn Gaetz the nomination and give a convincing cover story for his resignation from Congress. I'm not convince there's a fully-formed devious master plan for getting all the Trump nominees through the Senate, but I expect recess appointment is on the table. But perhaps the reality of Gaetz' overall unlikability is just a bridge too far. But he is still more electable this way, and may be Florida's Senate appointment.
 
So he removes himself from consideration. What does that say about his future? Just fighting allegations full time?

It's extremely unlikely that he fails downward. If he isn't directly in politics, he'll be in something adjacent, like a lobbying firm or some kind of right-wing media personality.

Collins and Murkowski have already announced they will be no votes. The rest seem to be using the warning language of not seeing a path, and the uphill climb ahead. At some point Gaetz will ask to pull the nomination rather than suffering the humiliation. Again, I see Gaetz as almost intended to be the nomination that Republican senators can use to demonstrate their independence of Trump, so the rest of his cabinet can sail through.

Why would DeSantis want to tie his fortunes to Gaetz? Gaetz's political future is somewhat comparable to Anthony Weiner's at this point; both exist only in their alleged minds.

Several prominent Republicans, including Florida's other senator, had been pushing Lara Trump. Gaetz might present a way of appointing a Trump sycophant without the obviousness of appointing a relative of Trump.

Not likely from what I have read. Gaetz just has too much baggage there are other conservatives wihtout the baggage, andtumot has it that Gaetz and De Santis don;t like each other, despite the public posing together.

Recess is Gratz’s favourite time of the day.

Anyway, I have always wondered what the GOP would do when some of the whackos they have around them are no longer useful and the obvious answer is they can get Madison Cawthorned. They even have their own kompromat to make them better hatchet-men. MTG and Lauren Bimbo are the same. They can be as outrageous as they want but no sooner does the GOP realize they have outserved their purpose they can be gone and none of the people defending them until 5 minutes ago will care.
 
I fear that Trump/Gaetz are caving on this in return for Congress Republicans agreeing to let him have the other nutjobs as Recess Appointments.

The problem is the inmates are now running the asylum. Thw Traditonal GOPers horribly miscaluclated their abilty to use and control the nutjobs.
 
ANyway, when the report leaks, which of course it will, it is going to make some interesting reading.
I guess the rumors there are conprimisng photos in the report might well be true.

No, I think Gaetz has no power. The manipulators are people like Trump and the MAGA wing. They will use these idiots until no longer needed.
