North Carolina’s second-largest newspaper condemns Trump for ‘ridiculous’ Helene response ‘falsehoods’

The joint editorial board of North Carolina's two largest newspapers, The Charlotte Observer and The News & Observer, rebuked former President Donald Trump on Saturday over his false claims about the federal response to Hurricane Helene.

Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, and a number of his Republican allies have been pushing unsubstantiated claims this week concerning the response of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to Helene, which left at least 225 people dead and dealt massive damage to infrastructure when it ripped through the Southeast late last month.

The former president falsely claimed that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was diverting disaster relief money to illegal migrants.

Trump said during a rally in Michigan on Thursday that Harris, who has no direct control over FEMA or any other federal agencies, had spent "all her FEMA money, billions of dollars, on housing for illegal migrants."

In an op-ed published by the newspapers on Saturday titled, "Shame on Donald Trump for worsening NC's Helene tragedy with political lies" the joint editorial board critiqued Trump's remarks for trying to benefit himself politically instead of bringing the community together.

"This is not a situation to capitalize on for political gain. But former President Donald Trump has politicized the situation at every turn, spreading falsehoods and conspiracies that fracture the community instead of bringing it together," the editorial boards wrote.

According to the editorial board, "the worst examples" of this is a Truth Social post this week in which Trump claimed that the federal government and Democratic state officials were "going out of their way to not help people in Republican areas" in the aftermath of Helene.

However, there does not appear to be any credible evidence to support Trump's claim, with Republican governors in affected states having instead thanked the government for a prompt disaster response.

Regarding disaster responses, I think there's a lot of projecting going on with Trump. When the Southern California wildfires created a disaster, Trump had people going through the voter registrations to see which areas were democratic and which were republican. He wanted to withhold funding to the democratic areas.

I think the aide relating this story gave up and said they were Trump voters in the affected areas.
 
Is there some way of breaking down who are the Trump voters? We will have them in 2028. The true MAGA, about 40%? Then folks who don't care for Trump but can neverheless ever vote for a democrat?
Then all evangelicals, abortion only voters etc.

To be fair, he said that about any Harris voters at his rally, not in general. It would take a particularly sick interpretation of his words to take this as a call for...

Obviously this is question with a crap ton of nuance, I am presenting this as one possible valid way to frame an answer, not some definitive absolute one, nor stating that there are not equally valid alternative ways. Very few people vote for a candidate for one specific solid reasons.

Most of all because I 100% truly and honestly believe that the largest demographic by far is "I honestly cannot tell you why I am voting for Trump, it is as emotional and 'gut' decision as a human can make."

This article suggests 5 major types of Trump Voters.

1. Staunch Conservatives, the ones that, as you put it, simply can't vote for anyone with a "D" next to their name. Generally older white males.

2. Free Marketers. Voters with a focus on financial freedom. Mostly middle aged men and in general the most educated of Trump voters. Tech Bros and their fanboys.

3. American Preservationists. The people who think there is some idea of "America" that is under attack by the Left. These are your hardcore anti-immigrants, your deep state conspiracists, your racists. Rural uneducated white folks for the most part.

4. Anti-Elites. These are you "All the problems only exist because smart people over think them and if we can just get some 'salt of the Earth common sense' types in office they will solve them. This is every idiot they have to sit down with at a diner in Iowa who goes "Now listen I run the 3rd largest mobile washing machine hose polishing business in this county and if I ran my business like those fat cats in Washington ran our country I'd be broke because my brain has no ridges or lumps and I think that's a valid comparison."

5. The Disengaged. People who literally don't care about politics to a performative degree and generally vote for Trump just because they find him entertaining and like seeing the drama he's creating.

Yes, a presidential candidate was threatening violence against his opponent’s supporters only if they were in the immediate vicinity. Let’s not overreact.
 
Joe, I see the anti-elites as a sort of general government haters. They do not see any benefit from the government. Then the pandemic happens. "who are they to tell me to wear a mask?"

In the last presidential election of 2020, 1.1 million voted for Biden and 1.9 million voted for Trump.

This year niether the Libertarian Party candidate, not the Pirate Party candidate got on the ballet. Quite odd if you ask me.

What's even the point of a rally? It's not the 1920s you don't have to do the whole whistlestop train tour thing to get your message out, even the rural areas have TV and internet.

Trump, sadly, really is the only recent politicians where a cult of personality pep rally makes sense within his persona.

I get nauseated enough just watching parts of his hate fests on TV. The idea of being surrounded by that much stupid in person is horrifying.

The reason candidates hold rallies are that they excite supporters, they usually get free media from local TV and radio stations and three they can ask for money in person.
