I'm not so sure about that. Nobody knew any more about Harris than they did about the other unknowns at the time of polling. As I just wrote, there were at least four other Democrats that polled better against Trump than Harris did. We can infer from that that they would have higher approval ratings. Again, not really relevant in the context of the claim that was made: that she is not unpopular.
Polls for the last few election cycles have been skewing in a distinctly conservative direction. While most of the American population have been uninterested in continuing to talk about Trump (in addition to depression over issues like the loss of reproductive freedoms, successful interference of Trump-appointees in holding Trump accountable for his crimes, etc) and thus respond to polling, the MAGA community has been gleeful about it. This has been demonstrated multiple times, such as in the supposed "Red Wave" that was anticipated by conservatives back in 2022.It's an interesting situation:
new facts come in fast, the public hasn't really digested the Trump shooting yet, and it seems like now they never will.
I would not consider any polling reliable until we have two weeks of no major events, which both sides have an interest to make never happen.
Let's consider:
barring an October Surprise, Trump is now at the absolute PEAK of popularity, having been boosted from the Convention and, just to remind everyone, surviving an assassination attempt. He also got a VP who is injecting energy into the campaign.
This was supposed to be the moment when Republicans reached and kept their momentum, with Biden too weak to do much about it.
Now, the tables are turned, and Trump is definitely on the defensive. Every momentum is gone.
At this moment, it looks like Harris can only go Up, and Trump can only go Down.
Actually, it means everything. It is the public's opinion of her after nearly three years in office. It might improve now that she is the presumptive nominee, it might stay the same or might get worse. Since the future trajectory of her popularity is unknown, her currently popularity is the number that matters, and the one the Democratic party ignored (as well as the polls showing her an underdog to trump and the polls showing four other possible Democratic candidates ahead of him).
Very good speech. Can someone from the US explain why she is so unpopular? As an outsider I just don't get it.
Someone aptly said the only job of the VP is to pick up the phone in the morning and ask if the president is still alive. If they are, the VP can go back to sleep, and that's his work day over. Like a soccer player sitting at the bench as a reserve for a whole tournament.

If she comes across as someone talking to bright children, she is already far ahead of the competition.
