Ed India going down the Dictatorship road fast...

Free to not watch John Oliver, sure.
We can still watch him, if we pay for Yet Another Subscription Service. Or we can wait 4 weeks and still see it for free on YouTube. The status of this particular episode in this country is still unknown to me.

ETA: I just checked, because I do in fact pay for that particular subscription service, and I can view the episode.

A lot of American YouTube's are blocked here for contract reasons. You can see the John Oliver show on paid streaming.

This idea that Australia is authoritarian is laughable. I hear it again and again, and somehow I still feel pretty dang free.

? Why Australia?

I meant YT taking the vid down, presumably because some mandarin in the government of India snapped his fingers at them. (Unless, like Orphiya Nay says, it's just some normal routine thing, putting up vids with a lag of some weeks in some geographies, a business decision nothing to do with the content per se. ...Although in that case, why first allow it to be out up, and then get it off the air, as Susheel implies.)

Oh, ok. So just a subscription thing, not censorship. (Although again, what Susheel said, or at least implied, that YT first put it up then removed it, seems more a censorship move than the other thing.)

What about the site for Reverse Snakes and the How To Eat A Mango site? He made those to get around the censorship specifically of his show and by extension the networks that host it.
It's oppositesnakes.com and I just checked and it's working.
Can't find the mango version though.

Yeah, this is ******* weird. I subscribe to MAX but can't get any John Oliver stuff on it.
I do, however, have a tweaked stick that gets me most things worldwide and I can get it all on that.
I might just end up binning MAX - my hacked thing costs me €40/y, sometimes things are a couple of days late on catch-up, meh. Ain't failed me ... yet. 3 years in.
Live TV is good mind, Aussie sport, cricket from India, European football ...

You need fast internet, mind.

Unless your meaning is that the premise - that India is going down the dictatorship road fast - is hyperbolic nonsense, no. I don't get your meaning.
Well, some things might have changed in the last three years. India might have been going down the dictatorship road fast three years ago, but in the last three years the speed at which it is going down the dictatorship road might have slowed down somewhat. Or it might have accelerated. It might have taken a side street or a scenic route.

My point is that you can't necessarily take a thread title that was chosen three years ago to represent the current state of affairs.

I am a firm believer in judging prophets by the outcome of their prophesies. If they make false prophesies, the thread should die, and they should be condemned. Not coddled into some weaker or less sensational claim than the one they actually made

Well, you do you. Personally I think some thread drift is not only inevitable, but desirable. Because stuff changes over time. That's kind of the whole point of time.

This is just the general thread on India these days. Perhaps it’s time for a new one, yes. Or maybe not. Modi is still PM. Hmmm.

It came to a critical branch in the decision tree with the election. Modi has been doing his best to appeal to extreme nationalism and has been cracking down on free speech. He could have done a Trump, claimed massive election fraud and rejected the results. Instead he appears to have accepted the results. He will still be PM but he can't claim to have won a massive victory that vindicates his move to dictator style government.

How well this pan out now? We wait and see. Better informed people than me may be able to guess his next moves.

Modi has been performing decidedly anti-democratic acts.

The OP was an opinion, not a prophecy.

Or maybe there is the fact that there is a pretty determined dissident movement that is actually helping to put the brakes on him. If Modi has not become a dictator it is not because of his lack of trying, but because of the efforts of many brave people risking freedom and at times, even life.
