Hindu nationalism is no longer the silver bullet.

They had inaugurated the Temple at Ayodhya with the expectation that it would oil their wheels to full election victory. They lost the constituency. In fact they lost the majority of constituencies in Uttar Pradesh (the Hindutva equivalent of backwoods Mississippi)...this is a major blow. The cow belt states have by and large preferred to vote for the regional party (still aligned with BJP) rather than the BJP itself.

This time the BJP alone wasn't able to individually garner the simple majority (more than half the seats) in the parliament that they had last year. They still have the largest representation though. So, their continuance is heavily dependent on two major regional parties in Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. If either one of these decide to shift to the INDIA alliance, BJP cannot maintain even a simple majority and form a government.
