In another direction, I find myself mildly curious about how this Slate article and anything further along these lines will affect anything.

The Donald Trump I Saw on The Apprentice
For 20 years, I couldn’t say what I watched the former president do on the set of the show that changed everything. Now I can.

Nothing in that was some big revelation, of course, but the examples of racism, sexism, and how the image they built of Trump was a lie being no longer being bound by NDA is still something. That there were apparently tapes of much of it is mildly tantalizing information, too.

From the article:
So, we scammed. We swindled. Nobody heard the racist and misogynistic comments or saw the alleged cheating, the bluffing, or his hair taking off in the wind. Those tapes, I’ve come to believe, will never be found.

Very few people read articles as long as this, but it should be required reading for anybody who ever watched ]The Apprentice, voted for Trump or consider voting for him. (It should be required reading for anybody watching 'reality' TV.) There are already plenty of clips of Trump being "racist and misogynistic." They don't seem to affect his popularity negatively. Neither does the footage of "his hair taking off in the wind."

In other words, Trump is a fraud, a fake, a liar, a con man, a grifter. Who knew?

Yes, we all knew.

But the thing about confidence in that article is to the point:

I reached out to Apollo, the Vegas perceptions expert, to discuss all of this. He reminded me how if a person wants to manipulate the signal, they simply turn up the noise. “In a world that is so uncertain,” he said, “a confidence man comes along and fills in the blanks. The more confident they are, the more we’re inclined to go along with what they suggest.”

Trump is stupid, dumb, an idiot, a fraud, a liar...

But he is confident about it.

It's not about uncertainty.

It's about the perception that The World is rigged against you, and the only way to beat it is by cheating/outsmarting it.
Trump has been beating (i.e. exploiting) The System all his life whilst miraculously managing to stay part of it.

It's an encapsulation of the American Soul: "we need to tear down the System of Oppression that is handicapping us and strengthen the System of Oppression that is benefiting us."

The Biden campaign is not going to make an issue out of Trump’s conviction.

I tend to avoid looking at Trump even when listening to some stupidity from his mouth but I watched him after he became a criminal in New York yesterday and I'm astonished how much weight he has lost. Quite genuine question - is he meant to have been ill or is it known that he's been trying to lose weight?

Has that actually happened anywhere?

Aside from that, the end of democracy talk, which is actually happening is license to do anything. Seriously, if you actually think trump means the end of democracy, why haven't you tried to kill him yet?

To be clear, the conservatives are doing it to, with much less back up. Trump is closer to the end of democracy than Biden to be sure. But all of that talk is dangerous and clearly a call to violence.
Trump has already done the call to violence bit. He's going to be even more extreme this time. He tasted blood on the 6th of January and he liked it.

That a rapist - as determined in a court of law and convicted criminal is even on the field in this election is astonishing. The fact that those two facts probably aren't going to figure in a campaign against him is beyond astonishing, we really are in a new world.

They think it's fake. And they think the other side is nuts for not believing that the clintons go around murdering people or that the bidens are getting away with (???)

Bigger clothes to make him just look thinner.

I think that this verdict is going to weigh heavily on Trump - it basically means the end of his ability to do business in New York, the place his father picked for their business, home of "his" tower.
He will spend most of his airtime complaining about the trial instead of talking about things his supporters what him to.

That will put some people off. It certainly won't win him new voters.

What a weird post. In the space of two paragraphs, you go from wondering why there isn’t more violence - almost encouraging it even - to hand-wringing about the possibility of more violence. But I guess when one is that desperate to both-sides an issue, coherence isn’t an ally.

How anyone can look at a guy who ended his last presidency with a violent attempt to overturn the election that he lost and think "He's not a threat to democracy" or "The people pointing out that he's a danger are the ones who are dangerous" is just... wow.

October 2021: Trump lost weight out of office because he no longer has access to the 24-hour White House kitchen, former aide says

April 2024: The Incredible Shrinking Donald Trump

Excerpt from the April 2024 article:
To wit, in the 2018 report, the White House physician clocked Trump’s weight at 239 pounds, and last fall, during Trump’s booking in Fulton County, an aide claimed that the ex-president was hovering around 215. This was widely mocked, but another doctor’s report last year also noted a “weight reduction,” attributing it to “an improved diet and continued daily physical activity.”
