Cont: Luton Airport Car Park Fire part II

Whilst plastics can be highly inflammable, simple plastics as in your ready meal plastic container, simply burns out very rapidly, shrinking and melting and rarely has time to make nearby metals catch fire.

You meant flammable. Inflammable means it is possible of bursting into flames on it's own.

The interior of a car is of tougher mettle, but you'll find that EV vehicles are not made of the type of plastic you might have in mind with your claim it would ignite via 'radiated heat' .

Scispace

What is the temperature required for a GFRP - as EV car bodies are largely comprised - for it to ignite?

Scispace

How much time have you spent in a car assembly plant? How about one that builds EVs? I am at my second facility that builds EVs and there is no difference between the plastics used in these and in ICE vehicles.

Rubber tyres. Are you sure these would almost immediately catch fire?

Where did anyone say immediately catch on fire?

Yes, we can add physical geography and climate to the impressive list of sciences Vixen thinks she understands but doesn't.

In his second Longmire novel, Craig Johnson described a Wyoming canyon:
It was a beautiful spot but, if you spent the first part of the winter here, you spent the last part of the winter here, too.
Four of Yellowstone National Park's five entrances are closed during the winter. The West Entrance usually opens sometime in the second half of April. Three entrances normally open sometime in May. I once tried to visit in May when those entrances didn't open until June.

In 1806, the Lewis and Clark Expedition was unable to cross the Bitterroot Mountains in May, and had to wait until June. When you fly over those mountains, in winter, with a window seat, you don't have to wonder why.

Even in New Hampshire's White Mountains (whose name should provide a clue), winter "hiking" is done on snowshoes and crampons.

Vixen probably figures the weather is more uniform across the US because the US is so much smaller than the UK.

You hike with crampons, I hike with spiked hiking boots.

The only places in the USA I can find that is on a similar latitude as myself are all way up north in Alaska <sfx 'North! To Alaska> and even then, they are to the south of me. So my geography is not bad at all.

Why should I need proof?

If I were to say I was an artist, can you dispute that? No. Just as you cannot dispute my being a scientist.

Can you dispute my being a sexpot or despot?

(In fact, I think I can dispute your being a scientist. I do it thus: You are no scientist, because you have neither the training nor the experience of a scientist.

Just as I am not really a sexpot, for I have neither the body nor the lascivious nature required to be a sexpot. As it happens, I have boobs that would qualify for sexpottery status, if only I were not male.

And if you really want to be knocked out, I'm sure we can come up with people whose qualifications as artists I would dispute. But, of course, art is not much like science in any case.)

Wait, you think that because it's a lower latitude it can't snow as much or get as cold?

Oh my god that's amazing. You're really showing off that physics education there Vixen!

I'd say that's one of the dumbest comments you've ever made but I'm not sure it would get into the top 10...

Er, there's more to it than just latitude.

But then, your general ignorance of scientific matters means that your latest blunder comes as no surprise. ffs.

Indeed. France is farther north than Boston, for goodness' sake, but hasn't the winters we do. The Netherlands is much farther north and the winters there are quite mild.

Of course, when you get close enough to the Arctic Circle, I'll bet latitude starts to trump. That said, this is all a digression because Vixen said that all cars are required to have snow tires in the winter months in Finland and that's not what the law literally says. At best, she's arguing it is de facto so, but that's a different matter.

As someone who grew up near Chicago, I'm astounded by her belief that we never had snow that stuck for more than a few days without melting. We used to practically tunnel through the snow to get to school. I mean, at the very least you'd think she'd have heard of the Donner Party. It's breathtaking to see someone so confidently stating something so egregiously wrong.

Your knowledge of geography is not in question. It's your understanding of weather.

As a scientist, you should know that winter temps in North America are generally much colder than those in Europe (ETA generally speaking at comparable latittudes). The standard explanation for this well-known phenomenon is the Gulf Stream current.

A scientist such as yourself should also know that weather at locations at similiar latitudes can vary widely across a large country like the USA.

London 51.5°N 48°F (Average High Temp in January)
Paris 48.9°N 46°F

Seattle 47.6°N 47° F
Fargo 46.9°N 16°F
Portland ME 43.7°N 31°F
Chicago 41.9°N 32°F
Nashville TN 36.2°N 47° F

If you find that breathtaking I'd suggest not attempting the Estonia threads without a good supply of supplemental oxygen to hand.

Continental weather and mountains.

Why not find out about the climate in the USA rather than guess.

Right, so when I visited Arizona and California in March of one year it wasn't snow that caused the North Rim of Grand Canyon to still be inaccessible and South Rim to have just re-opened, nor was it snow which had caused Yosemite to just re-open? Must have been Li ion batteries all piled up there...Even in the '80s.

Hey, if Vixen can lecture engineers about design safety, and retired sailors about ship operations, then lecturing us Americans about our own weather should be a (cold) snap!

Just to pile on, I live in northern Indiana, at about the same latitude as central Spain or Italy. We often get lake-effect snow from Lake Michigan, although Michigan and New York generally get it worse than we do. When I was 12 years old, we were snowed in for 10 days.
