Yeah, since the ice sheets (non-moving glaciers) are melted back to expose where the Vikings dropped their cool stuff, that means something. The ice sheet must have been at the same level it is now. So yeah, we're looking 1500 years into the past where the items were found. To me, that means the ice sheet increased in size at some point for some reason and now it's back to where it was 1500 years ago. Perhaps we're currently reversing "Global Cooling" which was a thing in the 1970's.
Off topic, but it's maddening to see these uninformed arguments over and over again. I'm sure it is useless, but let me attempt to explain to you that global climate is *GLOBAL* and therefore whatever happened at one particular place at one time is irrelevant to the big picture. So if it was abnormally warm at one mountain pass 1500 years ago for a few years, that in no way suggests that the planet was experiencing global warming.
And 'global cooling' was *not* a thing in the 70s. I was alive for that story, and it was a single article that of course got a lot of press but it was not a mass consensus of scientists, it never went anywhere, and now it is just fodder for denialists who don't understand climate change. The irony is that the authors of that story were correct in the sense that based on solar cycles, the earth should be in a cooling phase. However, our interference with nature is Trumping (got Trump in there
