Anyone want to bet who the people making these threats vote for?

As much fun as it is to leap to conclusions, you shouldn't bet before applying skepticism. According to the local paper, the chief suspect is someone who was banned from one of the gay bars. Let's not feed faux wood to the culture war fires.

I can find no 'local paper' claiming the 'chief suspect is someone who was banned from one of the gay bars.' According to the video you linked, what the reporter actually said is that "staff here at Rehab tell me they believe this person behind the call is someone who has been banned from bars in the area". So there is no 'chief suspect' and only what some staff are speculating.

Given the anti-drag/LGBTQ+ political rhetoric now going on in MO, where Republicans hold every statewide seat and super majorities in both state houses, I'd say the chances of this being someone banned from the bars to be a long shot. Not impossible, but not likely. That's why I said "Anyone want to bet who the people making these threats vote for?"

I find it more credible that staff who think they recognize a patron are correct than guessing it simply must be malevolent forces of reactionarianism, but YMMV. Gay bars <> drag shows, and the world is larger than this internet forum. The state may not be gay-friendly but the city is, particularly the part of town where these bars are. It's kind of the gay district, and has been for years. Any generalized malicious homophobes have had to get used to this particular bunch of businesses for a long time.

Anyway aren't the crazies upset at libraries and schools for perceived drag dealings? Gay bars are the place they think such things should be confined to.

The staff did not say they think they recognized a patron.

I find it more credible that it's a right-wing homophobe considering all the anti-drag/LGBTQ+ rhetoric going on in not only MO, but in several other conservative states. There's a history of like-minded individuals shooting up gay bars like Pulse (2016), Club Q (2021), Backstreet Cafe (2000) and the many threats of violence made to gay bars like the two in Atlanta just this week.

I guess if they catch the perpetrators we'll see which of us is right. In the meantime it's all speculation -- and I'd rather err on the side of not assuming it simply must be the most inflammatory possibility just because it's more exciting and fits in with a topic of current interest.

I'm assuming it because of the reasons I stated, not because "it's more exciting and fits in with a topic of current interest."

But, yes...we'll know when and if the perpetrator is caught. If I'm wrong, I'll have no problem admitting it.

Club Q was just last year, not long before Out Loud Men's Chorus held their winter recital. One of the choir members was present, but not injured. Physically at least.

Another anti-drag, anti-trans bill is one more step to becoming law in Arkansas, as it has passed their senate.

The bill would make it a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and having to register as a sex offender if a 'drag performance' is in front of children. 'Drag performance' is defined as, “exhibit[ing] a gender identity that is different from the performer’s gender assigned at birth using clothing, makeup, or other accessories that are traditionally worn by members of and are meant to exaggerate the gender identity of the performer’s opposite sex” and singing, dancing, lip-syncing or performing in other ways in front of an audience.

Yeah, between this and the bill to fine anyone using pronouns other than those assaigend at birth $1,500, the idea that they're 'just thinking of the children' is utterly laughable. The GOP is going full fascist and targeting a minority to be the easily attacked enemy. It will be trans people, then the entire LGBTQ community, and so on. It's literally exactly how the Nazis started their terror campaigns.

EDIT: Link to an Arkansas paper.

It must be terrifying feeling so threatened by people who don't fit into a conservative's opinion of 'normal'. But the again, some people aren't happy unless they're unhappy.

I'm very proud of my Millenial daughter who has several friends who don't fit what some conservatives consider "normal" when it comes to gender identification. She judges her friends on who they are, not what they are.
