Drag Shows!!

It must be terrifying feeling so threatened by people who don't fit into a conservative's opinion of 'normal'. But the again, some people aren't happy unless they're unhappy.

I'm very proud of my Millenial daughter who has several friends who don't fit what some conservatives consider "normal" when it comes to gender identification. She judges her friends on who they are, not what they are.

It's escalating so quickly. I'm surprised Trump's promise to outlaw gender affirming care for minors, outlaw teaching of acceptance of non-cishet identities, and even 'trans ideology' for adults isn't getting more attention on these boards.

Then again with the age bracket here, it wouldn't be surprising if as a group it were more interested in pretending they're oppressed for not being able to pretend the GOP isn't doing exactly what it is doing. After all, getting people to recognize that people agree with the people they explicitly agree with is 'childish' and 'not evidence'.

The staff did not say they think they recognized a patron.

I find it more credible that it's a right-wing homophobe considering all the anti-drag/LGBTQ+ rhetoric going on in not only MO, but in several other conservative states.

Not only in the USA :

A virulent campaign broke out on social networks against this reading of tales animated by two drag-queens from Toulouse. Under pressure, the city hall decided to reserve this workshop to adults

Not only in the USA :

Why address real problems when you can be morally outraged about the other?

'Drag performance' is defined as, “exhibit[ing] a gender identity that is different from the performer’s gender assigned at birth using clothing, makeup, or other accessories that are traditionally worn by members of and are meant to exaggerate the gender identity of the performer’s opposite sex” and singing, dancing, lip-syncing or performing in other ways in front of an audience.

If the bill had passed 40 years ago and if Julie Andrews had been in the touring company of Victor/Victoria then she would have become a registered sex offender.

Is the stage production of Some Like it Hot still touring? Under the wording of this bill, the morality police would have two easy convictions.

Hairspray is always touring, with Edna Turnbald always played by a man in drag. One more easy catch. It's been in production for 20 years in one form or another, but just now becomes a problem.

The outrage machine marches on.

Another anti-drag, anti-trans bill is one more step to becoming law in Arkansas, as it has passed their senate.

The bill would make it a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and having to register as a sex offender if a 'drag performance' is in front of children.

Yeah, between this and the bill to fine anyone using pronouns other than those assaigend at birth $1,500, the idea that they're 'just thinking of the children' is utterly laughable. The GOP is going full fascist and targeting a minority to be the easily attacked enemy. It will be trans people, then the entire LGBTQ community, and so on. It's literally exactly how the Nazis started their terror campaigns.

EDIT: Link to an Arkansas paper.

This is an absolutely ridiculous law. I'm so tired of republicans going off the edge of their flat earth.

At least it's a clear and coherent definition of the social construct of gender, with a direct link to biological sex. Which is a lot more than we usually get, in these debates.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis escalated his campaign against drag in Florida on Friday, making moves to pull the liquor license from Orlando venue the Plaza Live in the wake of a trumped-up investigation over minors at a local drag show.

The Plaza Live is my favorite venue for concerts and other events in our area. Generally the tickets are more reasonable than at other venues, parking is easy, and there aren't really any bad seats.

The venue is owned by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.

And therein lies the problem. They incorrectly link gender identity to biological sex.

If you can't do this in front of children:

“exhibit[ing] a gender identity that is different from the performer’s gender assigned at birth using clothing, makeup, or other accessories that are traditionally worn by members of and are meant to exaggerate the gender identity of the performer’s opposite sex”

then, as mentioned before, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon, Eddie Izzard, Harvey Korman, etc. would all be felons and have to register as sex offenders.

It's a moronic bill brought by fear-mongering extremists who have crap for brains.

I'm confused. Isn't DeSantis a supporter of individual freedoms and keeping the government out of our personal lives? I must be confusing him with someone else.

No it doesn't. It defines drag:

'Drag performance' is defined as, “exhibit[ing] a gender identity that is different from the performer’s gender assigned at birth using clothing, makeup, or other accessories that are traditionally worn by members of and are meant to exaggerate the gender identity of the performer’s opposite sex” and singing, dancing, lip-syncing or performing in other ways in front of an audience.
But it does not say what criteria the displayed gender identity must meet to qualify as being either that associated with males or females. It is the exact same definition you complain about in other threads.

Also, the bill has apparently been edited and now contains no mention of drag (or, I think, gender identity):
Arkansas legislators amended a bill that originally would have restricted where drag performances can be held but now does not mention the word “drag” at all.

It just restricts “performances”? What could possibly go horribly, fascistly wrong with that?

Can't wait for them to start arresting Catholic priests....

They certainly look like dresses to me!

I don't think that this Danish TV miniseries was controversial at all. If it had any repercussions for anybody, I haven't heard about them. But don't tell DeSantis!

Jeppe is 12 years old. His biggest dream is to become a professional drag queen. His parents contact Jeppe's big idol, the drag artist Tinus de Schunard. Because what do you do when your boy doesn't want to play hand ball and would rather perform in a dress and with long nails?
Hans forældre tager kontakt med Jeppes store idol, dragartisten Tinus de Schunard. For hvad gør man, når ens dreng ikke gider spille fodbold og hellere vil optræde i kjole med lange negle?

FYI, it's also very regressive in terms of liberty and freedom of expression. It requires that females adhere to female social norms and males adhere to male social norms, regardless of how dumb those norms are.

Then again... I view a fair bit of the narrative around gender identity to be incredibly regressive, for the same reason.

Either way, gender identity has nothing at all to do with drag, and should be kept completely separate from that topic.

Ahh, be realistic. Political parties only give lip service to individual freedom and liberty. They just choose different topics to protect and different ones to burn on their altars.

That makes it an even stupider bill.

The overly broad, hastily written, easy to abuse law is definitionally correct, so it's got that going for it. That supposed to polish that turd somehow?
