The Russian Invasion of Ukraine Part 4

Can't you see the totally obvious problems with this "concept"?
I don't see any, but you are welcome to point out some if you think you know them.

In the past centuries, state borders changed a lot, often after very bloody battles. Now, in our modern age, it seems logical (to me, at least) to make, from time to time, some border adjustments to take the sociological reality of said territories into account (one may think about Kosovo, Crimea and so on).

But political leaders seem to prefer to endlessly demonize their imagined opponents.

This seems plausible indeed (right size).

I am not personally interested in buying missiles, though.

I believe Ukraine should cede the territories which don't want to be Ukrainian to Russia in order to end this conflict quickly.

I even replied to Mrs. Zelenska on Twitter recently about this:
https://twitter.com/ZelenskaUA/status/1549812469467680769 .

The separatists and Russia forfeited any claim to have those territories become independent or join Russia by resorting to violence.

From the same channel, two posts later:

Of course that's what happens.
If it's true how come they are still so crap at stopping them.

In the UK at Spade dam there is a mock up of an entire Russian airbase with all the radars and electronic warfare signals that NTO jets fly in against to practice operations against Russian air threat.
It is equipped with all the Russian systems.

Thing is , this one is real not just in someone's fever dream.

These unexploded rockets look so small on these two photos ... (compared with the one which can be seen on the first picture of the wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M142_HIMARS).

The name of the Telegram channel you quote is "TheEternalUkrainian2". Is this supposed to be a person with Russian sympathies?

The latest instalment of this excellent visual overview of the course of the war has dropped. This one covers the month of June - Russia's "best month". It shows very clearly how little their best is.

You are saying Russia should be rewarded for it's ethnic cleansing campaign. This will just result in more invasions and more genocide. But good to know you don't see genocide as a problem...

None of which will tell them anything they don't already know. These are not some magic new explosive. What make the MLRS a useful weapon is the range and accuracy. Warheads don't make either of those things happen.

Any weapon system that actually works must seem like magic to the Russians.

I notice we’ve let CE slip away from their claim that the BBC said grain silos at the port were hit by missiles.

Not really much point in pursuing it further, after all, unless one really, really wants to raise the noise to signal ratio?

I sure would not mind if it is, but I am not simply taking the word of one party just yet. When they actually do manage to encircle and take prisoner (or wipe out) a substantial number of Russians, when they sweep around Kherson and have the Ruscist mock administrators on their knees begging for mercy, when Russia declares Kherson a faint and pulls back troop for redeployment to their "real" objectives (perhaps nearer the Caspian Sea), I'll be happy to call it a counter-offensive and declare CE an impotent prophet once more.

To poke at this a little, I disagree with your usage of counteroffensive. What I think that you're describing is more along the lines of the result of a very successful counteroffensive, rather than a counteroffensive, in and of itself. Like many military actions, success or how successful isn't really a defining feature of a counteroffensive, just the nature and context of the action. We can certainly root for Ukraine's counteroffensives to be extremely successful and be disappointed if they're not, but I see no good reason to deny such outright until such time as they are extremely successful.

This is actually possible:
Brazil happens to be one of the last three current operators of Gepards in the world (the others are Romania and Jordan).

I specifically remember an article that said, that Brazil is not willing to deliver its Gepard ammo if it eventually is going to end up in Ukraine. That was an isolated piece of news, that found no echo elsewhere, but it did coincide with talk about the possibiliy of Brazilian ammo falling suspiciously silent.

I noticed that the picture of Leopards was actually an image of some Cheetahs, just saying.

Putin raising the stakes in the gas war.H
He might be forcing Europe to go to other sources, something which Europe should have done long ago.

It's incredible that Russia seems to be shooting itself in the foot at every turn.

Part of the rationale behind the invasion of Ukraine was Russian disquiet about NATO expansion - and the response is that Sweden and Finland apply to join.

Russia's biggest export market for fossil fuels is the EU. By cutting supplies they are forcing EU to get off their asses and diversify their energy supply and the biggest winner is likely to be the US.

Very good, if somewhat disturbing, article from Fox News:

Putin's fascination with fake history and symbolism may go deeper than we know

It is not just Ukraine-erasing and a violent charge to wipe a brother country, or at least parts of it, off the map. The mission and mindset go much further, according to preeminent Kyiv-born, Russian-educated author and literary translator, Elena Kostioukovitch.

In a recent essay called "What’s Going on In Putin’s Mind," she says there is a toxic fascination in Russia, starting at the very top, with alternative histories of the entire world, theories which paint Russians as the real masters of the universe and ancient civilizations like Greece and Rome as mere inventions of phony scholars. Fake history, essentially, trumping even fake news.

This world view is largely based on volumes of something called "The New Chronology," which is the brainchild mainly of two Russian authors, an academic and a mathematician respectively-- Anatoly Fomenko and Gleb Nosovsky. One of the key premises is that dark forces tampered with all the history books in libraries across the globe at a certain point in time, wiping out or changing real versions of events and resetting dates.

According to Kostioukovitch, it is one of the many mystical, fantastical theories Russian President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle are peddling, and they have managed to sweep not insignificant parts of the population along with them, manipulating masses towards the conclusion that it is high time to make amends—not just for losing the Cold War-but for long-standing injustice against Russians. For the Kremlin, this works very well for the moment.

:jaw-dropp

**** me ! If even remotely true there are definitely shades of 1930's Germany there and their fascination with alternative histories - in their case Arian history.

That was what immediately sprung to my mind as well.
