This '40 mile convoy' is not a convoy.
It is just the road the Russians are using for resupply. There will be lots of convoys on it.
In WW2 the US had roads designated to take supplies to the front and a separate roads for returning vehicles.

If the Russians are relying on a single road they are making a big mistake, apart from jams due to overcrowding and breakdowns, a few attacks along it will bring the whole thing to a halt.
One of the reasons for the failure to relieve Arnhem in WW2 is that there was only one main road that could be used for the advance and it wasn't possible to push an entire army along it at the speed or in the numbers needed.
