This can't be completely ruled out.


It's a flex, the Russians know it's not a great idea but they're demonstrating how much they're in control by doing this apparently ill-advised thing - taunting the Ukrainians that they're powerless to do anything about it

If the Ukranians are actually powerless to do anything about it, then it's not stupid. It's moving armored vehicles into position.


If the Ukranians are not powerless to do anything about it, then tomorrow's news will bring some pretty gruesome pictures from along that road.


It's a trap, they're luring the Ukrainians out to attack the convoy with their planes/drones/armour/infantry and will then crush them with overwhelming force - this is why they've been holding back their elite/competent units until now

It's a lure, they want NATO forces to be actively involved so the Russians can claim to be the innocent victims of Western aggression. This is a tempting target to lure NATO planes/drones into attacking

I don't see this happening. To whom will they make the claim? Nobody likes them right now. However, it would be cool to see Putin on TV yelling "Help! I'm being oppressed!" Regardless, if that's the plan, it won't work. NATO isn't going in.


My interpretation is that they either have or think they have sufficient superiority that they aren't afraid of a major ambush from either land or air.

I hope they're wrong about that.

Very interesting. I'm not a psychologist (and don't play one on TV), but from what I read about him, he was nothing but trouble for his family from childhood with a complete disregard and contempt for any kind of authority. He would do just the opposite of whatever he thought was expected of him and breaking the law was nothing if he didn't like it. I wouldn't be surprised if he has oppositional defiance disorder. A former boss who fired Bentley said he had a drinking problem and mid-level narcissism. He certainly does enjoy his status as a 'celebrity' in Russia and Crimea and loves he attention.

I don't think you will find many people in Europe, continental or not, who will object to it.

Germany has been asked to increase their defense budget for a long time now.

I'm pretty sure the German soldiers participating in joint exercises with other NATO soldiers when I had my stint in the army 30 years ago had weapons. I'm pretty sure they were quite a bit newer than the M-1 Garand I was hauling about.

Oh and btw... *raises hand*.
 
Reports now say that Putin is also getting ready to start playing longer siege games. I know Ukraine had a lot of issues with Covid before, forcing them into grouped shelters cannot possibly be helping with that.

Benet finally sent medical aid which is something.
I wish he'd lift the weapon embargo but that's not going to happen.
Even Biden said he won't pressure him to do it.

Sadly, he's been there for years but knows that there's no real censure. The only way he'll ever stand trial is if he's no longer Russian leader and the only way that will happen is if he's dead.

Yup.

This does increase his chances of doing both but at huge human cost until that happens
 
He seems to be going the same way as every dictator does when reality fails to reflect what he believes and the junk he's been fed from his yes men.

Well, he possibly thought that he did.

He seems to have been trying hard to pretend to have had a WMD programme.

"Yes I'm making pesticides in this facility that ised to make nerve agents, and I'm putting a castor oil factory in the same complex."
