India-Bigotry in India

Ok, thanks.

I was wondering if the BJP has borrowed any of China's diaspora-dissuasion tactics, which might encourage guys not to get involved.

What's the story about? Why should I even click the link?

It is a report on the incarceration of Siddque Kappan, a journalist and activist from Kerala who was travelling to Uttar Pradesh to report on one of the many rape/murders perpetrated on the "lower caste" women by the upper caste. The arrested him and he has been in prison since October with initially no charges presented because under the extraordinary UAPA act, the state can arrest people without evidence for "threat to communal harmony". However, as in the case of many other critics of the current government under arrest, there have been attempts to manufacture evidence to justify arrests.

One aspect not mentioned is that many of those arrested have been denied bail while the cases are pending in court. The recent pattern has been the court setting the date for a hearing on charges which, after initial requests for postponement by the police, are ultimately heard. Invariably the charge-sheets are so badly and incompetently prepared with the court immediately rejects the charge-sheet, reprimands the police and then...get this... asks them to go back and do it again. Meanwhile the court insists that it is better or the accused to stay in prison for the sake of communal harmony.

For those like Siddique and Prof. Hany Babu (a close friend currently in prison for another case involving his defense of another activist Prof. G N Saibaba) the state is particularly biased against them for being Muslim.

(Respectful snip)

Thank you for the information and the background.

During the 2002 Gujarat riots in the aftermath of the near pogrom of the Muslims as vengeance for the alleged immolation of "pilgrims" returning from the then disputed Babri mosque---23 year old Bilkiz Bano was raped and various members of her family were killed including her 3 year old daughter by a group of rabid Hindu extremists. The current Prime Minister was then the Chief Minister of Gujarat and it is known that he was culpable in the violence unleashed across the state.
Bilkis Bano: The pain of seeing my rapists go free
11 people were finally indicted and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment. However, in 2024 even as Modi speechified about the importance of ensuring the safety of women in his "new India," all the accused were released by the Government of Gujarat. What is really shocking are the celbratory visuals of the releas as these people seem to be lauded as homecoming heroes by various extremist organizations and even government functionaries:

The Republican Party in the US actively courts racist voters by formulating campaign strategies to attract them......and then does it’s level best to deliver on its promises. While every Republican voter is not an active bigot, every active bigot is a Republican voter. They represent fully one-half the population of the US.

That’s right, at the moment racism on an institutional level is the policy of the executive branch of the government and the upper half of the congress.

I have no experience with India, but it doesn’t sound like your problems are much worse than ours.

Talking about racism in another country is so boring and doesn't offer you a chance to preen yourself on your superiority. Congrats on the swift derail!

I think the survival of India as a nation is in question if it keeps on this path.
And then there is the whole issue of Kashmir and what that could lead to...

Well the current Prime Minister of Kashmir has declared that war is not an option re; Kashmir issue:

Want ‘permanent peace’ with India; war never an option to resolve Kashmir issue: Pak PM Sharif

But for Modi and the BJP, this threat is a major dog whistle to "rally the troups" as it where.

Meanwhile in my current city of residence, Hyderabad, the local BJP leader was suspended from the party for a very incendiary public speech. BJP's move was basically a face-saving gesture. There is speculation that it was the first step in creating unrest around the time of the Ganesh Festival due to begin in a few days. The idea was to instigate violence to force the central government to suspend the state government and impose "President's rule" so that the BJP appointed governner becomes the interim government.

Journalist Siddique Kappan, who was arrested some two years ago while on his way to Uttar Pradesh to report on the brutal rape and murder of a girl by upper-caste perpetrators has finally been released on bail.
As such, it is a temporary reprieve since the State still has the power of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act that allows them to arrest anyone on mere suspicion of being “a threat to Indian sovereignty.” Essentially, it is a free license to round up those the government finds might threaten them.
No actual charges were filed during the two years of his incarceration, with the police asking for, and being granted, extensions to file on the assurance that investigations are revealing more information of Kappan’s supposed seditious activities. I guess even the courts finally decided that they may be stretching the farce too thin.
The really sad part of this is that Kappan’s arrest enabled the government to divert attention from the real issues of caste-based oppression and violence in the state that is regarded as the laboratory for the establishment of a Hindutva State.

Something I don't think that has been bought up about this is that the violence is spreading to expatriate communities around the world. And this is providing fuel for those who, like the editor in chief of the contrarian publication Spiked, want to argue that multiculturalism has failed...

There are two disturbing things about the Muslim-Hindu clashes in Leicester. The first is the violence itself. Gangs of men have clashed across the city. Hundreds of Muslim and Hindu youths in balaclavas and Covid masks – those plague-era face-coverings still have their uses, it seems – have confronted each other on normally quiet suburban streets. Glass bottles have been thrown, a knife was allegedly wielded (one man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a ‘bladed article’). It really blew up on Saturday night into Sunday morning, as the rest of the country was preparing for the queen’s funeral.
